91 T/a convert w/ 5spd
I have the opportunity to buy a 91 T/A convertible w/ 305 TPI 5spd set up. The hang up is the car has 119K miles on it and the seller wants $6K for it. It's in great shape body(red), top(black), and the interior(black leather) are all in excellent condition. Is this car worth $6k?? I know they didn't make very many convertibles w/ a 5spd. How long can the 305 go before I'd need to rebiuld it? Thanks!!

Ragtop 91/92 Trans Ams always seem to cost a premium. If he's asking 6k, try to talk him down to 5k. The 305 TPI should be good for at least another 70k if taken care of, if not more. If I were you I'd grab it, IMO they are some of, if not the, best looking Thirdgens made.

119,000 miles is nothing on a SBC if it has been maintained properly. Make sure it isn't burning any oil (at start-up or while running). If it is burning oil, bitch about it and try and get him to come down in the price.
To me, having a good exterior and interior is far more important than the engine. Engines are easy to replace/rebuild... and you will get many years of reliable of service out of them.
Body rust is a big NO NO for me, as once a car starts to have rust, it seems to keep cropping up ALL OVER... you never really seem to fix it...IMO

6 grand for that car is cheap! Grab it!!
As for rust, I know Glen lives in Canada, so he knows every bit as well as I do how much it sucks to drive one of these in the winter, and how bad rust can eat at things. IMO though, a little surface rust around the moldings is ok, as long as it isn't heavy. I've seen plenty of F-bodies around here come out of the paint booths and stay fine for several years. And if they don't see snow, they never seem to rust again!
