Transmission swap heeeellllpppp!

Ok, this is my first day as a member of this site, and I have a question!

I have an 85 Z 28 that is now being converted to a 5spd from an automatic. The Tech artical is a great resource though I due require one additional bit of information. What is the measurement of the location for the shifter hole?

My car is in about 5000 pieces and I do not have the motor and tranny mated at this time, if someone has a 5 spd car that could measure the location using a common reference point, or a picture with a tape measure would be nice.

Thank you,

Dave.

Try the transmission and drivetrain board. This board section is more for problems and comments directly about TGO.

As per the tech article you are reading (direct quote):

When the tranny is seated, install the 4 retaining bolts. Jack tranny & mark center hump where the shifter will protrude. You will need to cut a hole here. I used the dimensions that I found in the boneyard cars, 6 1/4" X 7 1/2". The center console, E-brake arm, & shifter need to be removed at this point.
----------
OH!!!! You need to know WHERE to cut the 6 1/4 x 7 1/2" hole....
----------
I think if you put it in the center of the 4 holes that used to mount your auto shifter it would be very close.

i cut mine only half an inch off or so and it kinda annoys the upper shift boot now heh.. no biggie but if you want a real good cut id wait till your installing it, make a hole big enough to install the shifter, slide the top boot on and use that as your guide

the hole starts about 1 1/2" from that dip in the tranny tunnel

... and then I saw the rest of your reply bob, so if I center it to the middle of the automatic shifter mounting point you feel that should do it??? I have the lower boot for the holes diamentions, I would just prefer to make the mess now than later.

dr, I will see if that works with your information.

Thanx guys

When you make your cuts I would radius the corners if possible just like in the link pictures. That should reduce the stress put on the sheet metal at the corners.

... and believe me I say that every time I go into the garage! LOL

Did I mention it is a single car garage, for those that say it can't be done, it can but there are days when I could use an extra 5' on the width.

Thank you for the pictures, they have helped, and if I need to weld one in I know where to find it!

As turd said, I will try radiusing the existing metal first.
