Difference in VIN on same year same model
I currently own two 1983 Z28s. Both were made at the same plant, Norwood. But in the VIN one has HD8 and the other has HDX. I am wondering what the difference is. I ran the VINs on the VIN check here, and got the same results. Both are 1983 Z28s, made at Norwood. The only difference I know of between the two cars is the car with the HD8 VIN has a 700R4 and the other has a 5 speed. I am just wondering if that is the difference or there is something else.

There is a check digit in the VIN that varies with each car. I am not sure which digit it is. There is nothing in the VIN that tells you which transmission a car has. If you post the first 10 digits of each VIN I can tell you more.

First car is 1G1AP87HDN146402
This one has t-tops, automatic trans, air conditioning.
Second car is 1G1AP87HXDN144103
This is basic bare minimum package it appears. No air, no t-tops, stickshift.
