Actually - it was, well at least in 86...
However, it was much more an appearance package than anything else. No direct changes to performance other than side pipes.
This is what came with the package:
* Custom Hand Painted Pinstriping
* Special Effect Rear Spoiler
* Shielded Sporty Side Pipes - Color Matched
* Fuel Inj. Logo if 4 or 6 cyl or to match cui.
* SS Logo Emblems
Optionally you could also get:
* Cragar Protech 15" Custom Wheels
* 14" Leather Steering Wheel
* European Wood Dash with glove box
* Burlewood or Aluminum Dash
However, the SS package was the least expensive of 3 conversion packages offered by Choo Choo Customs at the time. The other two was the SX, which had a few more details and then the TeamCamaro that was the so-called "ultimate" Camaro styling at the time. This was the most expensive of the 3 packages. Im not sure what these different pkgs cost at the time..
Not many have heard of these conversions and I have yet to see one first hand..

There wasn't an SS from the factory again till 97. Any Thirdgen SS's would have to be custom like the one mentioned above.

The newer ones arent factory either. They are converted Z28's by SLP, the 3rd gens were converted by CCC...but, one can certainly argue how much of an "SS" it was with little or no hp improvement.
However, I guess what you mean is that you couldn't order a 3rd gen SS like you can order an SS today - that might very well be true. The CCC conversions I would guess were dealer conversions...I don't know this as a fact though.

ChevyKen,
To the best of my knowledge, SLP no longer makes the SS -- GM does. SLP mearly offers suspension upgrades (and a few appearance modifications ie. wheels, dash plaque, etc..) The hood and spoiler are done at/by GM now.

Really?? Wow, that has passed me by - I sure didn't know that. I guess that explains why the SS's that were pretty "rare" in previous years all of a sudden flooded the dealerships..
Well thanks for clearing that up for me!!

Jason,
Didn't the Camaro SS make its debut in 1996? I ran against one yesterday and it did NOT have parking lamp daytime running lamps (I know cause he was in my rearview mirror!!). I know 1997 was the first year for these. Just curious.
