The base engine for the 1988 IROC-Z (coupe and convertible) is the 305 TBI. The 305 TPI was a $745.00 option, while the 350 TPI was listed at $1045.00 (coupe only).

5.0 TBI: L03
5.0 TPI: LB9
5.7 TPI: L98/B2L

The base engine in the 1991 RS is the 3.1L V6 (RPO LH0). Optional was the 5.0 TBI (RPO L03). The TPI was not an option on the RS, except with RPO B4C (Special Service Package).

You can also check the 8th digit of the VIN. Its E for a TBI, F for a 305 TPI, and 8 for a 350 TPI. That will tell you what the car originally came with, but engine swaps are easy.
