Anyone ever tried to find the original owner?
Anyone ever tried to find the original owner?
I have finally decoded all RPO codes for my 88 IROC. It was a "customer order" for an L98-equipped car with many individual items that would make it a 1LE, without it actually being a 1LE (the car is even red over carmine red interior). I now autocross the car and plan to take it out on a road racing course (Nelsons Ledges) at least once this summer. I bought it off of a young guy who I don't think really understood what he had. I more or less feel like I am in a position to appreciate this car and want to learn about why the original owner ordered it the way he did and to let him know what happened to it. My guess is that the original owner would be pleased to know where his IROC has ended up.
Based on the car fax report, the car was originally registered in Maryland, then some years later was registered in Pennsylvania where it remains.
Have any of you ever done this? How did you do it? Was the original owner please/displeased to hear from you? I just curious.

I did it, the original owner of my car is about 70 now though. He ordered the car for his wife. It was easy for me to find him though because I had a copy of the original order form and the original loan agrement from the dealership with his name, address, social, etc. He was quite pleased to hear from me although not very interested in the car but he was more than happy to answer all of my questions.
Just go to the dealership where you car was bought and they should be able to tell you who yours is. If you don't know the dealership just call Pontiac customer service with your VIN and they can tell you.

In PA you can run a title search and see all previous owners. Just go to a notary public and ask them to do it for you.
As far as talking to the original owner, I was lucky enough to buy my 87 Camaro LT from the original owner. It was interesting to meet the one and only other owner of my car. She didn't seem to be attached to the car as I remember. It served her well, but she was ready to get rid of it. I of course was more than happy to take it off her hands. I never met any previous owners of my 90 RS though. Some day I'll have to look into that.
