One or the other isn't stock. It's either an RS or an IROC. Look in your RPO tags for the Z28 code. If it's not there, then you've got an RS.

Well, that is very interesting ...
RPO codes on an 88 camaro are on a sticker in your center console.
If it is a Z28 ... it will have a Z28 in the list of codes.
An IROC Z was a specially optioned Z28 ... it will have a Z28 and a B4Z code as well.
In 1988 RS camaros were not made unless they were "California only" models with V6 engines.
I would bet your RPO code list has a B4Z and a Z28 in it which makes your car am IROC-Z. I would go on to guess that your car had the rear bumper cover replaced by one from an 1989 RS with the same body color.
zi hope that's the case.

First off, there are only 2 Camaro models for the 1988 model year: IROC and Sport Coupe. There is no such thing as a 1988 Z28, or RS. From 1985 - 1987 you could by a Z28 with the IROC option. IROC was not a model for these years, but an option on the Z28. This changed in 1988. From 1988 - 1990 IROC was it's own model, and there was no such thing as a Z28. For 1991 - 1992, the IROC was discontinued, and the Z28 returned. RS models were available from 1989 - 1992. With this in mind, you will not find Z28 in your RPO codes as stated by a previous respondent. What engine do you have? If you have a tuned port engine then it is without a doubt an IROC. If it's TBI it could go either way. If it's a six cylinder it's a sport coupe. I don't know off hand the RPO for IROC, but someone here should know. I think it was listed in someone elses response before mine. If your car is an IROC, you should have IROC badges in the following locations: The dash on the right side, both doors, on the rocker panels, and on the rear bumper cover right side.
And dont forget the RS's made in 87.

Thanks to everyone who answered my topic, however in reply to cdartz, I do have the Iroc-z on the doors.I have Z28 on the dash and i have the R/S on the rear bumper which has not been replaced. I have the 5.7 tuned port injection (350). So I guess I'm still wondering what's going on. But, thanks anyway
Jim's right on the money, everyone else in this thread is chock full of misinformation. All Irocs 85-90 will have Z28 on the RPO sheet. Irocs from 85-87 have Z28 and B4Z to designate a Z28 with the Iroc package. Since the Z28 wasn't really available without Iroc from 88-90 the B4Z code wasn't used, only Z28.
To Johnslady1, Either someone replaced the bumper, replaced the badge, or built a RS to look like an Iroc. All of the above are common practices. Check your RPO's as they're the only way to be sure.

Hey cdartz ... don't feel lonely. I keep forgetting that in 1988-90 the only Z's were "IROC-Z"'s and the only RPO was RPO Z28.

Hey I noticed everytime johnslady1 types RS he puts R/S. Do the emblems read RS or R/S not that this makes a big deal or anything it just could be an aftermarket add-on.

It sounds to me like you have an iroc with the 350 tpi, they didn't make an rs in that year with a 350 tpi,if someone did make a phoney they went into alot of detail, perhaps they changed the rear bumper cover or emblem,i think you can also find out by looking at your door sticker on the drivers side and look at the tire size,if it reads 245-50-16 then you have an iroc,if it shows a size 15 tire then then it most likely is an rs but some irocs i believe came with 15 inch iroc wheels, smack me if i am wrong, lol.

you wonder why they call them iroc-z's(emphasis on "z") cause it stands for International Race Of Champions - Z28 so yes it would have the Z28 designation if it was an iroc...if im not mistaken you could have ordered a base Z28 w/o the iroc pacakge, the iroc was an extension of the Z28 RPO whatever yall been smokin' to think you can have an iroc w/o it being a Z28 need to start sharing (puff and pass man, it's relativly simple)
i think some one may have back into something and they just put on an RS bumper not knowing the difference...

If you are positive that the rear bumper cover has never been replaced and everything else is correct for IROC, then there is only one explanation. Someone screwed up at the factory. This does happen. I test drove a 1990 GMC 4X4 brand new at the GMC dealer. The door panels had the Chevy symbol then K1500 next to it on one side only. The other side had the GMC K1500. It could've happened.

Thank you for your reply I am John and I have asked my wife to check out our car and R.P.O and have talked to many dealers concerning our bumper emblem and they told me that they have seen this before when manufacturer on the bumper where it is imbosed the emblem has put the wrong emblem. In fact the dealer told me that they had a car (Original owner)) has a car he bought from them with Impala on one side and Malibu on the other. However we have 4 R.P.O . numbers that we and every dealer cannot Identify so here they are (1AY)-(YA7)-(AO1)-E7Z). My friend if you have any info concerning the above please respond. Thanx John

You could not get a Z28 w/o the IROC option in 88-90. IROC was no longer an option it was with ALL the Z28's. What gets me is that people say that the Z28 was not made in 88-90. That makes no sense as long as you are a logical person: It still read Z28 on the dash emblem, the RPO was still Z28, and the "Z" in "IROC-Z" stands for Z28. The only thing was that you couldn't get a Z28 w/o the IROC option.

The reason that many people say the Z28 wasn't available is because GM themselves advertised in a way that suggested the Z28 was no more, and the IROC was the top camaro. Many 91 promo's even mention "the Z28 is back" as if to say it wasn't available...
