I'm looking at buying a 1989 Trans Am, its a 5.0. automatic, but i'm wondering if there was more then one 5.0 available that year like with camaros. And also how do you tell if its a 20th aniversary Trans am? decals?

 

The only 5.0 available in 89 TA's was the LB9 (305 TPI), I don't think the LO3 (305 TBI) was available in TA (Birds and Formulas only)

The 20th anniversary TA's are the Turbo Trans Am's and thats a 3.8L with a turbo so you are just looking at a plain 89 TA 305 TPI 700R4.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

 

I thought you could get the TBI in a TA, but I'm no expert.

Thanks, I think thats all I needed to know, I looked under the hood and its TPI so i'm assuming thats the 305 with 170HP.

 

Scratch That...i just looked up the LB9 engine on the internet and this website says its either 210HP or 230HP....is this website correct?

 

The 305 TBI was available for the TA in 89.

The 305 TPI with an auto was rated at 190HP in 89. 225 with the 5speed and dual cats.
