700R4 or 4L60 ? ? ?

Am I just slow and stupid or is there a typo in the lit. that I have? According to everything I read (Dealer Manuals, Popular Mech. CD-ROM Manuals, etc) my car has the 4L60 tranny when I thought it had the 700R4. What's going on? The RPO code is MD8 and my car does have this code and GM's owns manauls says that in 1992 MD8 was the 4L60. I thought that the 4L60 was a 4th gen tranny?

Can someone clear this up for me??

BTW, to clairify, the dealer manual I have is a hard back, what looks to be about a 3000 page "PONTIAC 1992 FIREBIRD SERVICE MANUAL" that I got from a Dearborn MI library sale that is copyright 6-15-1991 General Motors Coporation. Also I have a Chiltons, a Haynes, and the Popular Mech. CD-ROM and they all say that my car has the 4L60.

Thanks

They are the same only the 4L60 is used usually with an E on the end of it signifying it was Electronically controlled. Our, 700r4 was hydrualically controlled making it the same but different I think I read this on 3rdgen.org or some other page. I am sure this will be backed up by other guys if no other responses try the tranny section.

I'd say slow and stupid, yes.
Basically GM changed the naming convention for transmisssions. The 4L60 and the 700R4 are the same thing. 4L60 being the new naming convention. The E is the big kicker since in 94(?) the tranny was changed to be Electronically controlled.

For someone with a website that claims to be an authority, you should know this stuff. This isn't exactly the first time you didn't know what the hell you were talking about.

Drew's right on here. 1994 was the first year for the 4L60E (and the 4L80E used in pickups).

My 1993 turbodiesel Chevy P/U is a late year truck and it has the 4L80E in it, even though the manuals show it should not have the electrically controlled transmission.

Thanks for clearing it up for me.

Drew, I've never claimed anywhere at anytime that I was "An Authority". If you haven't noticed, that's why alot of the tech articles on my site aren't done yet. Everyone makes mistakes, your stupid a$$ included I'm sure! It's a shame you have to be such an a$$hole just to make yourself fell big....

I believe that is your signature isn't it?
I'd assume that if it's "THE 3rdgen Firebird Site!" that you, being the webmaster and all, would at least know everything there is to know about your own Firebird before you would try to tell someone else about their Firebird.

Damn dude, what the f*(k is your beef with him? He's just trying to clear up something that confused him. Its not like he asking a stupid question. Not everybody knows that a 4L60 is the same exact thing as a 700R4. Not everyone can know everything there is to know like you. I assume you know everything since you're jumping his **** for a simple question. So what if his sig says "THE firebird website". Its still in work, and he's running it and paying for it by himself. Not everything can be perfect right out the door like your website. I assume this is your site. 'Cause if it isn't then you don't have two legs to stand on. Moderating on somebody else's board and running your own site are two different things. Relax and stop taking offense to a simple question!

I take offense to his lack of knowledge and his eagerness to have people believe he knows everything when he obviously doesn't. Besides he sets himself up for it in his own post.

As for my credentials, I've submitted quite a bit to this site. I've moderated in one form or another for a couple of years now. I've spent more time here than most people ever will. I see people come and go that pop up one day and act like they know everything, then they hang around for 6 months or a year, then they disappear when it becomes obvious they were just blowing hot air.

Sorry, I don't have much tolerance.

I think we all need to take a "chill pill" and relax!!!

Not everybody knows about everything, whether it is cars, boats, or whatever!!!

I learn something everyday whether it is on my camaro from this site or another or from a friend. Or I learn something new at work or working at home or whereever.

I feel good when I learn something everyday but I noticed that lately there is a lot of criticism on other cars, people, etc or whatever!!!

IMO, if the moderators "act" like this, then new people to the board will see that it is okay to act like a**holes, and it will only get worse.

I will never know everything about my camaro but I will try. I am not perfect and neither is anybody else. I have many books on camaros and read them quite often but that is only part of the "camaro history"

I was really shocked at the coment by Drew
!!!

If this continues, it will only get worse!!!

We cannot "moderate the moderators", but perhaps the other moderators can do something about this non excuse criticism!!!

Let's cease the Bulls**t and enjoy this website!!!

As for the 700R4 vs 4L60, I DID NOT KNOW they were the same and I have owned 5 cars and all have been camaros for the last 15 years. Does this make STUPID? I hope not!!!

Drew, do your job and moderate but do not be an a** about it. Be stern!!!

We depend on you guys for some valid info and I do really appreciate it!!!

I would like to hear what other moderators and other members think about this!!!

Manny

He's had it coming for a long time, thats my opinion and its been voiced. Besides that he asked an honest question and I gave him an honest answer. Thats what these boards are about. On the internet I'm not going to go out of my way not to hurt someones feelings. If they're that sensitive they should be sealed in a plastic bubble and protected from the real world by their parents and guardians.

I feel the need to repost this for everyone to see and think about...

"Am I just slow and stupid or is there a typo in the lit. that I have?"

Well there obviously isn't a typo (since its listed as a 4L60 on 1/4 of the books pages, and even so by his logic the 4L60 didn't exist yet) so that leaves the only other option he offered... slow and stupid. If someone sets themselves up for the easy hit, they're gonna get knocked down.
