Found: '92 Heritage RS, Green with Gold
Here's what a dealer has called me with, now I need an idea of what a fair price is for it:
-'92 Heritage RS, Polo Green Metallic with Gold stripes
-70k miles
-All power, t-tops
-3.1 V6, AT, one owner
My girlfriend checked this thing out for me a few hours ago (its 2 hrs from here, where she lives). She said it drives perfect, only a small scratch on the rear bumper, and is totally bone stock.
The dealer was asking an asinine 8900, and is offering it to me for a continually asinine 6900. I told him for 5500 I might come have a look, he wants to hold firm. It isn't a 305, so it isn't exactly what I am looking for, but in near-flawless shape (and being a 25th to go along with my 30th!!) and with the 25th paint scheme that is by far my favorite Heritage colors, I am somewhat interested in it for a driver, and an eventual 305 TBI swap candidate...
What's a fair price?? I say 5500 sounds about right, and for me its economically feasible because I know I can get 3500 for the '89 by selling it at work. But by not budging from 5500, am I cheating myself out of a nice car though if he still wants somewhat more for it?? Thanks in advance for any advice.

It'd be a better TPI swap candidate, as the 90-92 MPFI V6 and TPI V8 use the same computer, the same fuel pump, and that kinda stuff.

I wouldn't give over $5000 for it. I paid 7 for mine with 82,000 on it. And ended up sticking 7 back into it in the last two years.

Be patient with this dealer. If you think it's what you want, let him sit on it for a while, and you'll be able to get the deal you want. Don't make him feel like it's exactly what you are looking for. He will definetly not be able to sell it for what he is asking, just be patient.

Hold out for 5500 since its only a six and maybe explain that key point to him. Otherwise, I'd keep on looking. I'd be hesitant on buying a car for just the 'rare' paint scheme and be stuck with something disappointing powerwise. Yeah, you could drop a new engine in but then that's the additional money you could've used to buy the right car in the first place. If you get any pics, post them.

I think that is way to much... I only paid 4 grand and now have a total of 5,300 total in it. If I were you I wouldn't give more than 5 grand.

Jason,
hold off!!! The dealer is asking too much. There was a 92 polo green in the Denver area for $7000. It had a 5 speed 305 tbi and only 29k miles. It was fully loaded with t-tops, etc and even the originally window sticker.
I almost bought this car but lost out on it.
Be patient, they are out there!!!

Thanks for the responses. I told the dealer that when he's ready to actually sell the car and not waste my time, I would talk to him. He said he would call tomorrow...
I really like the car, and I haven't seen another green one yet. As I said, this is going to be a driver and a casual show car, not a factory hot rod (that's what the 30th is for!). The 3.1 is fine for now, and I do plan on letting the dealer know that a 3.1 is no prize...
And as for the response on swapping in a 305 TBI, I would do that because I want a stock-appearing and driving car, especially if its a 25th. A TPI in an RS has always looked hacked to me, no offense to anyone. I like stock or stock-style cars...that's my preference. Don't knock TBI...with a few bolt ons it is a decent powerplant for a driver.
I plan to hold firm at 5,500 and see what happens...I really like the car. If its there in a month, maybe 5k will snag it
I will say one thing...for 6900 it WILL be there a month from now!

Well, I got the dealer down from 6900 to 5860 to finally 5500. So, I now have the price I want, and I plan to drive it finally next weekend...
Anyone want a mint '89 RS 2.8???

Good luck and I hope it works out for you. Now if I can just find my 97SS to compiment my 92...
That still sounds like about $2000 too much for a V6. Make your best call since you're the one with the money, but for $5,500 you could find a 91-92 L98 car with similar miles.

I understand what you mean. Admittedly, with this car (should I choose to buy it...still thinking) I am paying more because of the condition of the vehicle and the Heritage cache. For $500 less, I just found an '88 IROC 350 with t-tops and the same mileage, documented from day one, and in as perfect of shape. ARGH! If I didn't want an anniversary car so bad, I wouldn't be as excited about this car. The major thing holding me back (obviously) is the 3.1...
Condition is the major selling point on this car for me...still being in college more or less means I don't have the funds for a restoration! I told him I'd have to think it over...in the meantime, if anyone wants a 25th RS, I'll give you the dealer's #. At the very least, it will make my decision easier
