Canvas cargo cover?

While on a trip to the local bone yard I came across something kind of odd. While scouring the newly intered shells there was an '86 firebird with the pullout cargo cover, I am missing mine to my camaro. However everyone I seem to find is vynl based and the rod is bent. This one in the car was made of canvas. Just how rare is that? I ended up buying it for $6 on half off day yesterday. I would like to know if this was an aftermarket item or an option. regardless it is going into my car because it is definitely different looking. I would have searched before asking, but as we know the site is stilling be worked on. Thanks!

From 82 to 90 all pull out shades were canvas factory. only in 91 and 92 were they vinyl factory.

It is 82 to 90 factory option equipment.

I have the canvas and it sucks because before I got the windows tinted, it turned all purple/pink from the sun fading it.

I've never seen that problem with the vinyl ones in the j/y

The vinyl ones fade just as bad if not worse.

I have a vinyl one in my 85, don't know if it is factory but I am pretty sure it is. I bought a cloth one because my rod was broken and I was able to take the end cap off and replace the cloth with the vinyl and put it back together. I have the cloth one if anyone needs a good replacement.

black 86 IROC - black vinyl, still nice and shiny after all these years when cleaned and "black magic'd" regularly

red 86 IROC - not sure what it came with, it has one of those locking/flip open covers with the big bose speakers and amplifier in it (never saw one of those before)

red 83 Z28 - locking/flip covers

red 91 RS - semi faded black canvas roll up cover

blue 88 Formula - semi faded black canvas roll up cover

I beg to differ, my 85 Iroc RPO code states a vinyl one.

My 87 Sport Coupe came with a vinyl roll shade. I'm 99% sure it was factory original as my parents bought the car in 89.

I too swapped the vinyl on to a working canvas one, but alas it too has failed

They are nice to have but a PITA because they won't roll up, I have to roll it up manually while I am closing the hatch and by the time I am ready to shut the hatch the darn shade falls from the clips that hold it up

My 1991 has a canvus one. It was faded to almost a complete purple color when I finally used Dupli- color's vinyl and fabric coating in flat black. It now looks almost new.

I have an excellent one I took off my old rod and if anyone needs one they can have it for $10 plus shipping. I will also tell you how to replace it without breaking anything, remember this is the black canvas cloth only.

Re: Canvas cargo cover?

Bringing this one back ... from our reference cars ... When did the cars come with Canvas vs. Vinyl roll away covers? This is option code D42 Rear Compartment Security Cover. I'm looking to restore my 89 with the correct one .. I have both.

Mark.

I have seen 91-92 with canvas
82-87 at least with vinyl.
Not sure of 88-90

Re: Canvas cargo cover?

My 89’ had a fabric cover when I purchased the car in 1999. Don’t know if it was original. I swapped it out to a vinyl cover from an 84’

My '88 T/A was a one owner, 50k mile car when I bought it. All original except for the battery and alternator, as gar as I know. It has a vinyl cargo cover.

Re: Canvas cargo cover?

From what I have seen 82-90 were Vinyl, the Canvas were the 91-92 and the Canvas shades were used as replacement parts. Keep in mind they had one part number in 1992 parts catalog - 10094972, I think even the "OER" that Classic Industries sells is the Canvas...
I would be interested to see if anyone has a 1989 Parts catalog if it had a different part number.

I would think part of the reason for the change was a minimal amount of weight savings, as unbelievable as that may seem.

John

Although my 89’ had the canvas, who knows if it was replaced at a later date since I am not the original owner.

Weight savings could have been the reason for the change, maybe cost or maybe reduced glare on the rear window.
