To modify or restore, that is the question...
I just recently purchased a '86 IROC that is unbelieveably clean, for Minnesota (I.E. NO RUST WHAT SO EVER). It has relativly low miles at 88,000. I'd originally purchased the car with the intention of modifying the ***** out of it, or into it if you'd prefer. Then it hit me. How rare is this car? I don't want to go butchering a potential classic.
My car as I stated before is an '86 IROC Red on Tan with the 5 speed/305 (low output 155HP) and T-tops. It's running a 3:23 posi out back. Also it seems to have all other available options except for Leather. Everything appears stock and the #'s match.
So, is this car worth the time/effort to restore to stock form, or are there a ton of these on the road so I can go ahead and modify the **** out of it and not be concerned. HELP!!!???

Well I hate to admit it, but as with most third gens, you should do whatever makes you happy because, for now at least, they're not worth much as collector cars. If you had a TTA or a Firehawk or a 1LE, then that would be a different story. Go ahead and mod it if that's what you like or leave it stock and restore/restify it if you like a factory original IROC like I do.
Either way, just have fun.

It's like this, in 20 or 30 years it might very well be worth alot of $$ but right now they are common like the cold. Do what you fell like doing. If you would enjoy stock then keep it stock. If you want to mod it, don't do anything that can't be undone, IE: kepp all of the original parts and don't drill any holes or anything.
For me, I enjoy my car stock as it is....

Clean, original, nice IROCs themselves are becoming more of a rarity these days. I say restore it, keep it nice, and you will be amazed how much fun you will have showing and cruising it.
If you do decide to mod, keep them of the bolt-on variety, and keep all original parts. Just my .02
