I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it's on driver' side of the engine block at the front part... around the timing chain cover... get a good light in there jack it up a few inches and you should be able to get the number
good luck

engine codes? are you referring to the block casting code? the only place i know of where it is located is on the back of the block, to the right of the distributor, and to the left of the master cylinder.

Your vin number will tell you which engine your car has. Look for the 8th digit. punch your vin number into the vin decoder here on the thirdgen site, and it will tell you which engine your car has.

Also, if you are looking for the rpo code for your engine, look in your console "glovebox" (sorry, for lack of a better name) located between your seats. The RPO sticker should be in there, check to make sure the vin posted on the sticker matches the vin of your car, for obvious reasons. Now, look for one of the following codes on your RPO sticker. If you see L03, you have a 305 with throttle body injection.
If you see LB9, you have a 305 with tuned port injection. I'm not sure if 350's came in 89 formulas or not, but if you see the RPO code L98 on your sticker, you have a 350 with tuned port injection.

To determine the engine by vin, a 350 TPI has the number "8" as the 8th digit of the vin. (ex. 1g1xxxx8xxxxxxxxx) *

A 305 TPI has the letter "F" as the 8th digit of your vin. (ex. 1g1xxxxFxxxxxxxxx) *

I don't recall what the 8th digit for a 305 TBI car would be. I'll add more when I find out, unless someone else on here knows? (gestures at all 305 TBI owners)

* -Indicates that the x's are only place holders for a sample vin number.

Engine VIN stamp is located on the right front of the engine just below where the head meets the block right above where the water pump inlet is.
