In some cases yes, in others no. It all depends on how much someone is willing to pay. If the original color is rare, id say keep it the original color. If you do not like the color go ahead and change it to what you like, its your car, you should like it. If only a few 84 camaros were made in this color, I would leave it. Down the road (many years) it may end up being worth more because it is original.

1984 TransAm
1994 TransAm GT
1994 25th TransAm GT
1990 T-Bird SC
1971 Boss 351

Four TransAm's are not enough. Firebirds for all.

Rare color or not doesnt have much to do with it when you really get down to it. What does is the buyer, if they want a car thats been painted a different color or not. You will find that purists looking for a collector item will not purchase a car that is not the original color/s. Weird people IMO, but thats how they are.

On a yenko camaro, yes. On a low mile 1LE Camaro, yes. On any other thirdgen, no. Especially brown. Nobody likes that color, so changing to something else will definately make it more appealing. You may not get more money for it, but you'll sell it quicker at the same price.

Its not that the car costs more for original paint. Its that the car costs less for new paint. Usually because of the reasons they got one. Mostly people get paint jobs to touch up something or sell it for more. It doesn't matter what someones asking. Original will sell more not because its original, but because it was taken care of so well it doesn't need paint.

I agree...when I buy my next third gen, I don't wanna car that's been re-painted...makes me wonder what lies beneath I'd rather pay a little less and KNOW what I'm dealing with...

As for purists being weird, if that's the case, then I am the weirdest person on this board probably. But so what?? What's the matter with keeping a 17 year old car original?? I think you will find MORE buyers out there for an original than you will one someone modded/hacked up. With all the hopped up ones out there, originality can often be what makes a third gen stand apart. My lowly, clean, original 2.8 RS gets more attention on the street than my friends '89 RS with a cammed 305 TBI with Holley injection, American Racing wheels, aftermarket spoiler, etc...makes him mad too

As for Briar Brown, orange rocket on here has an '83 L69 Z in this color. He had a section of the car re-painted in this (rear hatch), and I thought it looked pretty good. Will everyone like it? No, but it sure does catch attention...its a real period color that I think adds to the appeal of an old third gen...

if you like the color, then keep it, reguardless of what other people think, especially those who think that "no one likes that color." my firebird s/e is brown, and i have gotten many complements from people because of the fact that its different and you can tell it apart from all the other trans am's and iroc-z's. if you're looking to sell the car, just remember that a blue camaro with brown interior isn't too attractive to a potential buyer.

I guess I should clarify what I said, because it doesn't seem to fit the direction this thread has gone.

I completely agree that if your car is 100% all original and in great condition, then the stock paint will make it worth more.

But on a regular car, not a museum piece, nobodys 15-20 year old paint is going to look all that good.

If the car was painted properly, a repaint is going to make the car look a lot better, and as such will allow you to get more money, or at least have more interest in it.

If the car was freshly painted, then you need to spend more time inspecting it. Sometimes a repaint was done to cover up a hidden mess, and other times it was just to freshen up the car. Careful inspection will almost always uncover the truth about a repaint.

I agree with all that has been said about rare color options. They might not be as hot as the reds or as slick as a high gloss black but they still turn heads. Unless you are really dissatisfied, keep it. It fits the period, it was the 80's
( mainly).
My copper/ gold Z may only be the third lowest in production numbers from '85 out of 7 or 8 colors but I certainly don't pass too many on the road! Enjoy 'em while you got' em!

I swear I can't say anything without it being picked apart and every vowel analyzed. Yes, I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that like brown, but if the color was that popular, GM would have offered it for a LOT longer. All I meant by my comment was that brown was not a popular color, not that I actually felt that nowhere did a person exist that liked the color.

Jim, you shouldn't swear. It's not polite. Although some people do like swearing. Not everybody, but some do. But then there's those who could take it or leave it. So in the end, I guess I'd paint the car brown too...or maybe red is better.
