anyone have an L98 with 2.77s and a factory oil cooler?

Me and a buddy are having a debate. i want to see whats up. he said in 89 the performance package that gave you dual cats also came with the 3.27 gears and the oil cooler. Now i was under the impression and Drew also said that all L98 cars came with oil coolers. My buddy says that his 89 L98 did NOT have a oil cooler. so whats up. could you delete the oil cooler or whats up. he said his options sheet says something about not having an oil cooler too.

My 89 L98 came with 2.77's and no oil cooler. It coincidentally also came with a 115 speedo, all from the factory.

Thats interesting, I've never read anything that said the oil cooler was optional. Anyone have any documentation to back this up?

Its interesting that these cars are showing up without the oil cooler, as everything I've seen indicates it was required with the L98. I'd still like to see some documentation that proves this. Either SPID sheets, or dealer order forms, or window stickers that indicate these cars came this way from the factory. I have sales information and cars to back up that the oil cooler was required with the L98 in 87 and 91.

Mike Metzler's CD (82-91 Parts and Illustration Cat) shows that LB9s and L98s from 87 to 91 were 'supposed' to have the oil cooler. Dontcha love GM.

Drew, I am looking at four '89 IROC build sheets. All are equipped with the L98 engine GH3 2.77 axle and G80 posi. None of these cars have the KC4 engine oil cooler option. Any questions you can email me. David

ah...someone finally proved me right

from my knowledge in 89 since you couldn't buy a Z28 anymore (you bought the IROC) GM had to have a "package" to buy like they did in 85-86 when they still had the Z28 and the "IROC" was the package

from what i know the package was a "performance" package added on to buying a IROC which included:

an oil cooler
dual cats
3.27 rear gears

but who knows what GM did

The sales brochures for the 88 and 89 camaro would probably detail what was required and what came standard with the L98, but I don't have anything between 87 and 91 in my collection.

I have an 89 IROC-Z, with 2.77 rear gears, i don't know if I have an oil cooler, I believe I only have one cat (like I said its the only one that rattles). But you're saying that the IROC-Z was a package on top of a Z28 in earlier years (which it was), so what you're saying is that my car is not an IROC-Z, but a Z28, with IROC-Z written on it?

The next question that comes up is this... do these cars (88-90 Iroc's with bad gears, no oil cooler) have 16" wheels *stock of course* and the wonderbar?

hummm....maybe Gm decided that it was not neccisary and pulled it off the cars thinking people would not know and pocketed the cash.
