10 Conspiracies That Killed the Camaro and Firebird

From Carcraft January 2002 page 16

On September 26th, 2001 GM made it official: The Camaro and Firebird will die after the "02 model year and the Ste. Therese, Quebec, plant in which they're built will close forever. We all knew it was coming, so there's no surprise. But it's still so very sad.

Obviously there's one major reason why GM isn't going to keep building Camaros and Firebirds--they haven't been selling a lot of them. But why haven't they been selling a lot of them? It's all about conspiracies.....

1. Cheetos. Instead of spending the money GM allocated for engineering updates to F-cars over the past decade, it's rumored that the engineering staff at the Milford Proving Grounds blew it on Frito-Lay's toodelectable Cheetos. They were able to buy two family-size bags a year with the cash!

2. Aliens. GM was expecting an influx of immigrants from Mars and designed the Camaro's and Firebird's ergonimics to suit them--not human beings.

3. Elvis. He's still alive, and he's the guy who designed the spoilers on the latest Trans Am. His sense of aesthetic restraint is unmistakable.

4. Mass hypnosis. In 1979, Kreskin mesmerized the whole country during an appearance on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson and told them they didn't want to buy a Camaro.

5. Alan Alda. The actor's popularity during the '70s and '80s so emasculated the male population on of the planet that they lost their desire for macho cars. And it was all done at the behest of the National Organization for Women.

6. The Commies. When there was a Soviet Union around, F-car sales were good. When the USSR fell apart, so did Camaro and Firebird sales. Could that possibly be a coincidence?

7. Baywatch. Everything bad is connected to Baywatch somehow.

8. The Trilateral Commission. We're not sure who these guys are, but they sound blameworthy.

9. Advertising Executives. They took all the money GM had allotted to marketing the Camaro and Firebird and blew in on a box of No. 2 pencils.

10. Stars. With a Pisces moon, a Libra sun and the way Saturn and Neptune are aligned, the Camaro and Firebird were doomed.

By the way, GM says the two cars are "on hiatus," which implies that they might be back some day. Just like how The A-Team has been "on hiatus" since 1987.

Anyways I just wanted to share that article with everyone. I thought GM stopped production of the F-cars cause they weren't going to meet government crash test ratings.....

my favorite theory: not enough proffit. How much $$$$ do they make off of boxy SUV's? How much less $$$$ do they make off of smaller, more expensive due to need of more & smaller parts, of the F-body? The corvette is exempt from this theory as it costs more $$$$$ than the SUV's. ANd how much $$$$$ proffit does GM make off of those cars? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
