I have a question on the early (metal) Z28 hoods.

I have a question on the early (metal) Z28 hoods.

I have a question on the early Z28 hoods.

I know they made the fiberglass hoods from '82-'83 and that they were discontinued, but how long did they make the metal ones that looked identical to these? Or when did they start making the ones with the inserts?

I thought it was kind of novel to have a metal hood that looks like the fiberglass one with the flaps and everything (non-functional).

So the metal '84 hoods are actually "more rare" then? (Or less of them were made.)

Thanks for the quick reply!

82-84 had the metal hood with the non functional inserts. 82 and 83 you could option the composite hood but i belive only on crossfire motors. maybe on the L69 in 83 but im not sure. 84 was the last year for that style hood. in 85 the iroc style hood came out with the louver inserts and later in 91 that same style hood got the blisters. hope this helps.

The L69 is a 305 4bbl. I thought it was available with the composite hood, just not the cold air induction.

According to the Parts & Illustration manual, the SMC hood was available in 82 on the LG4, and 83 on the L69.

I know the functional composite hood came with the LU5 305 Z28(and from what I understand the recall program replaced those hoods with the non-functional steel hoods.Real good call GM).As for a non-functional composite hood being available I don't know.It would have been a great weight savings on a L69 cars. But they came late in '83 model year as the composite hoods were being phased out(I'm lucky my '83 CFI Z still has her original functional hood).HotRod what is the 8th digit of your VIN(S-LU5,7-L69 or H-LG4)if you don't mind me asking.

Apeiron does it show anything besides the LU5 for '83?

This topic has been discussed before. I have an 1983 Z28 that i ordered from the factory, built May 31st 1983 at Norwood, sequence number 169958 very late in the model year. There was no selectable option for composite hood. I went through ever one with the dealer when i ordered it. Car was delivered with composite hood and LG4.

btw, my car was ordered after the L69 was available. Dealer and i talked about it, but I declined it. I regret that now big time.

Took it back to the dealer later for the hood recall. Hood was inspected and found to be not defective, and left on the car. It is there to this day.

I also believe that if you had CFI and a composite functional hood that was defective, they would have replaced it with a steel functional hood. Otherwise, half of your air cleaner functionality would not work.

Phess11 that's interesting, and really cool, that you still have her.The original owner of my '83(seems like they checked off every option available)must have had the same results when they went to the dealer for the recall.
You and HotRod both have LG4's with the non-functional composite hoods.I wonder how the assembly line decided what non-LU5's got the composite hood if you couldn't specify it on a special order.
Maybe by the time the hoods for our cars(mine was produced at VanNuys 3rd week of June '83)were made the body section or sub-contractor had the problems worked out.

I have never seen a steel functional hood. That would be neat.

What if the Crossfire composite hood separated and they needed to replace it with Steel. A non-functional steel hood would block off its primary source of air.

The hood flaps weren't the primary source of air, just a gimmick more than anything else.

Or in MY case, to let the fire out when your CFI 305 backfired and cought the hood insulation on fire

Must be why they call it cease-fire injection.

In everything I've read so far the composite hoods were replaced with non-functional steel hoods. It didn't matter whether it was a LU5 - and in the process lose one of it's big features in the functional air induction or if it was a LG4/L69.But I still find it very interesting that you couldn't specify a SMC hood when your ordered, like Phess stated. And I wonder if it made a difference in the Norwood vs Van Nuys cars when it came to getting/not getting the non-functional composite hood or the steel hood.
Another interesting item is the CFI motors didn't get a snorkel to pick up cooler outside air from the headlight pocket(do you limit/defeat airflow in with headlight covers?).
