Is this a good deal?
Hey everyone, this is my first post on this site.. so yay.. Also, Im new to most things about cars, so if you could answer any questions I have i'd greatly appreciate it.
Anyway, I recently say an 85' Camaro Berlinetta for sale for $1,000 (Canadian money) or best offer.
It has an almost all original 305 in it, automatic tranny with about 80k kilometers on it. Interior is decent, cloth seats, a few water stains on the carpets, no cd player or air conditioning, frame is in good condition.
Everything was redone within the last 2 months, including the brake lines, new brake pads, new tires, and a new master cylinder. No rust except a bit under the car and inside the wheel wells. There is also a small hole in the front right wheel well. Thats the only thing wrong with it.
Im pretty sure its a great deal, but id just thought id post here to see what some of you guys think.

Check the floors, the fender wells, pull the hatch stripping, look underneath the car ETC. The more you invest in checking for rust now the less you will invest in rust repair tomorrow!!!!!!!!!

lol, we already have a written agreement in place. which we each have a copy of. we're not really buying the car to drive anyway. we're gonna fix it up, and see if we can sell it and make a bit of cash. my dream is to own a 69 camaro, maybe even a 69 charger (yee haw!!!) but that will be a while from now.

spend your money on something else then... A car is never a good investment if you are trying to make money off them. It aint real estate. You never get what you put in.

Heh I don't think you'll get more than you put into it unless you make it show worthy. If you want an F-Body to put in your garage and fix up for yourself, then it sounds like a good deal. If your wanting to invest six grand in it with a friend then I would go with something like a Stingray Corvette, but hey thats just me.

Honestly, I think you might want to rethink this. You stated that you wanted to buy this car for 1000 dollars, then between you and your friend putting 4000-6000 more dollars into this car (making the total investment 5000-7000 dollars), and then turn it over for a profit. I may be wrong, but I honestly do not think that you could bring that kind of money for an 85 Berlinetta, as they are not one of the more sought after models.

dam power crap LOL I live in beater central. Actually it is a mix of tractors, beaters, and porsche/mercedes/audi. A kind of rich, farm town. Strangly, most of the population here is comprised of polititians. It is the county seat. Long story short, I have yet to see a decent Camaro around here, and was hoping to have the first one. All of the other specimens are base models with cracked, stripped, or faded paint, and have the fenders held on by key rings.

In most peoples eyes, a Berlinetta is a base model.
They're just about universally despised, and would be difficult to liquidate at any price. Factor in the added complexity and resulting maintenance of the digital dash and specific components and you're dealing with a money pit of extraordinary proportions.
For the money you are looking to spend on a Berlinetta you could shop around and find an Iroc or a Z28 or any number of Firebirds that would be much easier to sell and would have greater potential to make a profit. Further, buying a clean, original, unmolested thirdgen would provide you with a better car for less money then you could restore a hammered example.
