Build sheets?

Before I tear my car apart, I would just like to know who has found their original build sheet and where did you find it?

Thanks

never found the one in my 82 t/a

missing

most ppl find them either under carpeting front or rear, or on the top of the fuel tank, or under a seat stuffed in it, etc

i found one in an 88 once, it was somewhere under the rear carpeting, i still have it

wish i could have found the 82 one, so i could know what it had from factory

good luck

Run the 82s vin through here Pontiac Historic Services Home it would cost you slightly but its worth the money. This is for Pontiacs only

As for my 87 Iroc havent really looked Yet. But we had an 82 pace car that the owner had found it before us on top of the gas tank

I found one of mine under the drivers seat, But I haven't found any others yet. I heard that there are 3 for each car. I'm guessing there is another one under the rear carpet above the fuel tank. And I heard that someone found one behind the front bumper cover.

BTW: The one I found was all tore up in pieces and incomplete.

The notion that every thirdgen has any build sheets at all is a misconception. The build sheets were basically a list of parts that every car got as it was assembled. A guide for the guy or gal on the assembly line putting the car together. When that particular person had done their job and thrown whatever parts into the car, the list could either be buttoned up under a door panel, or under the carpet, or over a gas tank, wadded up and thrown away, or even stuffed in a pocket and used as TP during a lunch break. Further, the 'build sheets' usually only give information on specific subassemblies, like seats/interior. Some give more info then others, but generally they're all pretty useless.

There was no set rule, and searching for something that may have never been there, or may have been removed, or may be from another vehical that a previous owner robbed parts off of, is a fools errand. There are easier ways to find all the same information, the easiest is the SPID in the console glove box, or the rear locking storage compartment.

I agree that they arent in all cars..but i disagree with the notion that they are useless. My build sheet lists every option on my car...nice to know for us with cars prior to RPO stickers

True, however in most cases the 'build sheet(s)' aren't nearly that complete, if they're even there at all. Further, they're usually so badly stained, torn up, rotted, whatever that they aren't legible.

I've completely removed interiors from at least 7 fbodies, carpet, panels, seats, everything completely stripped, and I've found a grand total of 1 sheet of paper I'd consider a 'build sheet' and there wasn't enough left to worry about. The only usefull tidbit on it was the gear ratio, and pulling the cover would have been easier then removing the sheet. In the case of later cars I believe the build sheet is less complete than earlier cars, but that's just my own personal theory.

For Pontiac's, PHS provides the same information in their packet as you'd find on the build sheet along with the rest of the goodies. Chevrolet's historical packet likely contains the same, though i've yet to check.

And on the '85 and later cars with the SP sheets make sure the VIN matches the VIN of your car. With the console door's tendency to break and be replaced you could have someone else's RPO list.

under the front seat

I found mine under the front seat and that's wherer it is to this day. I figure the only way to remove with out any damage is to take the seat out. I really have no other reason to take the front seat out so there it stays. There is also a decal with all the option codes on the back side of that cheep locking glove box in the trunk
