86 Trans Am questions (All firebird/trans am gurus in here!)
I came across a Trans Am I'm very interested in. It's an 86, a 305 TPI, automatic, black leather, t-tops. The car is gorgeous, and claims to have only 52k origional miles. Has the map pouch thingy on the dash (or whatever that is) all power, etc. Did they have 305 TPIs in those years? Along with black leather? I'm not too up to date on the firebirds/trans ams... I'm a camaro guy. The car is 3500, and to me, if it's all origional and for the condition it's in, that's worth it to me.

I may just have to buy it. As I said, the car is stunning. I always had love for the third gen firebirds, and what would be better to compliment my IROC than a Trans Am?

Check the glovebox for the SPID. If its not there the car probably doesn't have the low mileage they're advertising. Make sure the VIN on the SPID matches the VIN under the windshield, then you can decode the SPID and it'll tell you all the original options and the interior color and material. If the mileage isn't real, what else has been fudged? I'd stay away unless it can all be authenticated. A 86 305 TPI is a dog performance wise. The early mass air is a real PITA, it'd have the lame camshaft, probably lousy 2.77 gears... Also it'd be the 85-86 large cap distributor that never seems to work right. V-belts... With the ttops on that early a car unless the mileage is really low and it's been stored inside and attention has been given to maintaining the weatherstripping they're going to leak. Figure on needing a new fuel pump too if it's been sitting that much.

Thanks for all the info. I bought my camaro from the same guy, and he was very informative about it, told me all the history, etc. This firebird he couldn't tell me much, nor how many owners it had. If it only has a supposed 52,000 origional miles, how many times could it POSSIBLY have changed hands? $3500, for a pretty much undocumented car (you'd think they'd have the window sticker at least), is way too much.
I've now got my eyes on an 88 GTA. The car is clubbed, missing door moldings, the spoiler, and a few other things... but I love GTA's, and for how much they don't turn up, it could be worth a couple bucks in the future. The $700 price tag makes me drool even more.
