Checking for matching numbers drivetrain - IROC cars?

Hey folks, I'm looking to add another 3rd Gen or two and have a question for you experts. On my '89 TTA I was able to easily verify that the engine and trans were the ones it left the factory with. VIN's matched, thank God!

Where exactly does one look to get the numbers off the engine and transmission in the 85-90 IROC-Z's? I wouldn't be surprised if you have to remove A/C compressors or alternators, so I'd like to know where the engine numbers (VIN corresponding?) are prior to getting dirty myself or asking someone else to do it.

Thanks in advance - Having the right engine and trans is important for most of the cars I buy.

There is a flat spot on top of the block near the passenger side head on the front side of the engine. It's part of the deck surface, but protrudes out past the head. You will find the casting number here, and I believe the last 5 of the VIN. It may be necessary to remove an A/C compressor or alternator depending on the year of the car in order to read the numbers. You can run the numbers on Mortec.com.
