Dual Electric Fans
Did all tuned port injection motors come from the factory with dual cooling fans or was it an option code?

Re: Dual Electric Fans
Didnt all the TPI's come from the factory with the cooling fans from 85-92? Ive read a couple places that they only came standard on TPI's from 87 and up.

Re: Dual Electric Fans
In '85 the LB9,I'm almost certain, used the same single electric cooling fan as the L69.I believe this continued until '87.After this the TPI motors used the dual electric fans and the single electric fans were used on everything else(similar to the demise of the carb on the LG4 so went the engine driven cooling fan).I have a '82-'88 part catalog but have to find the right page for correct years.I'll update when I do.

Re: Dual Electric Fans
I thought in 87 only the 350 cars got the dual fans then in 88 all TPI cars got them

Re: Dual Electric Fans
Can anyone out there confirm that their 85 or 86 Iroc (LB9) came with either single or dual electric fans from the factory?

Re: Dual Electric Fans
I've had 2 of them,..... 86's and they both had the single electric fan. I also had an 87 (305ci) that DID have the duel fan set-up ( If it matters ) The 87 was the highest optioned IROC package and also included the engine oil cooler.

Re: Dual Electric Fans
In looking at the '82-'88 Camaro parts catalog Group 1.000 shows dual fans starting in '87 and single fan for '85-'86 LB9.In '87-'88 the LB9 could still come with the single fan(with RPO-C41 heater/defroster)if it didn't have A/C(RPO-C60).And both the single and dual fans underwent a design change but the catalog doesn't say of what type but the part numbers are different.
But as you ask the only definite answer would be from an original owner or as close to that as possible.

Re: Dual Electric Fans
In 1985 and '86, only a single fan was available on TPI cars. Dual fans became available for TPI cars in 1987. But they weren't a specifically-orderable option. They came on A/C-equipped cars. And since most cars had A/C, that would mean that most TPI cars had dual fans, which is why you see so few with a single fan, making duals appear to have been a standard feature on all TPI cars.

Re: Dual Electric Fans
It should be noted that cars with AC and LB9 or L98 from 1987 & up had dual fans. It has to do with the AC runs the second fan, it could also be turned on by a temp switch in a the head IIRC. When the AC was turned on it would run the fan when the pump was running. The primary fan was run by the ECM.
THere are 3 temp sensors on TPI cars.
1) in front of the plenum - for the ECM
2) on the Right head ( I belive this one is for the temp gage )
3) on the Left head ( I believe this one controls the fan over ride)
