want to put b&m shifter in...
I want to put in the b&m console shifter in my 88 trans am. from the pics i have seen of the shifter console piece it looks like i need to modify my console. i would like to know what is involed in mods before i buy the shifter.
the shifter is the b&m megashifter bmm-80692
or i need a new center console anyway so which one would go with this package without having to mangle the shift plate to bad

You have to cut off the ashtray section first and use only that part of the shifter plate. Also have to cut off wires for neutral safety switch/backup lights and use switch supplied with Bm shifter. I have a BM Mega-Shifter in one of my Camaros and have a Hurst Dual-Gate in the other. The Hurst uses all of the OEM wiring and comes with a new shifter cable. You also cut the shifter plate as described above. I have had no issues with the Hurst once I got it properly adjusted and installed. The BM Neutral switch and backup light switch always seem to need to be adjusted(backup lights staying on while driving). This has been my experiance. Search this forum for mega-shifter and hurst dual-gate. More info there. Badman

Re: want to put b&m shifter in...
Just installed the Megashifter in my 89 Iroc and i did not have to cut of the ashtray section all i did was use the template overlay and cut up the original shifterplate section then the plate supplied by BM fits over the original plate using stock boltholes it fits fine,be careful not to brake the plasticplate its getting very thin and could easily brake if you overuse force or the wrong tools.
Otherwise no problem fitting all other things cables and such as electrical virings, pretty much straitforward install and when ready looks good and so on but offcourse u have to cut up the original shifter plate and thats not good if u whant to keep the car totally stock, but all in all i think its a very good update and when mounted i think the stock look is not altered to much and it makes the shifting so much fun/securer.
The only thing i wonder is why was there no option from the factory for a shifter just like in some 2nd gen Camaros i had one in my 73LT.

I wish there were something for 2nd gens too, I have a 700R4 going into my 77 and I am going to have to hack something in a major way to retain a console.
