Engine Code/Size ID-History
Engine Code/Size ID-History
Hello! Searching for my engine size/block stamp codes....
I was searching for my Engine Size Code/Stamp in the typical 2 places on 305/350's - 1) in front of the passenger head on the block under valve cover and 2) behind the distributor on the engine block-drivers side. Both places showed no engine ID's (my engine has been painted).
However while I was under the car, I noticed a '305' -Stamped under the engine block near the fuel pump in 1 INCH RAISED numbers. No other letters or numbers beside it - just a plain '305'. ANY idea on what year and model this engine may have come from?
Previous owners installed Edelbrock 1406 600 CFM Carb and Performer intake and B&M Pro Stick Shifter. Trying to find out more about this Camaro's history - thanks!

Re: Engine Code/Size ID-History
First welcome to TGO.You'll find a LOT of nice people and info on here.I know I have.
A little more info on your car would help.Do you know,or have an idea, that the motor is not original to your car?The eighth digit of the VIN will tell you what motor was original to her. Also if your car is an '84 or later there should be a RPO decal(SPID)either in the center console or on the underside of the lid(make sure the VIN on it matches the car).On some cars it can be found in the locking storage compartment on the drivers side of the luggage compartment.
The engine code/build date/partial VIN is stamped into the block deck on the passenger side(just behind the alternator or A/C depending on year). It wouldn't be on a tag(although later cars did have a bar code/part number decal on the valve cover). The 305 stamped into the block indicates it's a 305 but i don't know if all years have that. It's funny you mention as I've never noticed if my '83 has it.Her engine ID is stamped in the block. You may have to use a wire brush to clean off the paint as it may have filled in.Or if the block has been decked then it may have been milled off.

Re: Engine Code/Size ID-History
Thanks very much sir!
I have an idea that the motor I have now is not the original motor. The car did come with a 305 initially and yes it has been decked. The reason why I am curious as to the size/year of my current motor is that the car used to be raced with a larger engine previous to this one. My Camaro as it stands after all the mods 'post' racing days - has an Edelbrock 1406 4 BBL 600CFM Carb and Performer intake, as well as a B&M Shifter and straight dual Magnaflow exhaust. The AC has been removed and also the exhaust manifolds have been replaced with 02 Sensor 'Deleted' manifolds. Due to all these mods and add ons, I wondered if I indeed still have a 305 in it.
Thanks again for the information. Take Care.

Re: Engine Code/Size ID-History
Sorry! Re-Larger leaf springs...
I have an 81 Camaro ( the one I noticed the '305' stamp on the engine block in a location not typical for a 81 and under 305/350) - which has the leaf springs, and I have a 87 Third Gen Camaro and a 1968 Buick Riviera 430 7.0L V8.
I was wondering if my current 305 in my 81 could be taken from a 3rd Gen or other late model Chevy.
Thanks
