Question about Z28/IROC emblems - when they switched?

hi all. i have searched high and low and can't seem to locate any concrete information on this question:

on IROC-Z's, when did they switch the outside emblem's (rear bumper right side, both sides of ground effects in front of the doors) from Z28 to IROC-Z?

i found this information on the main thirdgen site under tech data for 1988.

1988 = Chevy Camaro LT option dropped. Chevrolet Camaro Z28 model dropped and replaced by the1988 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z28. (although interior dash badge still read `Z28 IROC-Z', rather than just `IROC-Z' as on exterior badges)

this is why i ask. my cousin just picked up a 1988 "IROC" 350tpi from a guy that worked at a body shop and is a very fresh repaint. anyway, all the emblem's on this car all say Z28 with IROC-Z real small under the big Z28... and on the back bumper where the emblem is it's like the bumper is molded around the the z28 emblem.

you guys have any thoughts on this?

Re: Question about Z28/IROC emblems - when they switched?

All of the emblems on the outside of 88-90 IROC's say IROC-Z. 85-87 the GFX and rear bumper emblems say Z28 with IROC-Z stickers almost above them on the doors instead of towards the back of the door like the later years. They all still say Z28/IROC-Z on the inside dash. Take a look at www.IROC-Z.com for year specific pictures.

Re: Question about Z28/IROC emblems - when they switched?

that's what i thought. so should i assume someone has swapped the ground effects and rear bumper from just a Z28 (like i said, it looks as if the bumper is molded to fit the Z28 emblem, the IROC emblem wouldn't seem to fit the mold)?

all other signs shows this is the correct car, from RPO's to VIN matches, tach, shifter, etc.. i just can't figure out why it has the Z28 emblems instead of the IROC.... i'm going to try and get some pics to post to help describe what i'm talking about.

Re: Question about Z28/IROC emblems - when they switched?

the emblems are interchangable. It's the same bumper cover/gfx for 85-90. Who ever switched them probably did so because the old emblems were in bad shape or damaged during removal. Finding the IROC badges isn't as easy as the Z28 ones.
