olds block in a 1987 trans am
hello there,
I have a 1987 TA that I will use to swap all my good GTA parts to from my chrashed GTA.
In this TA now is a carburated Olds block, I haven't been able to give it a real close look. My mate and me want to rebuild this Olds block once taken out, ( a very good chevy small block will be swapped from the GTA); in our estimation the crank shaft of this Olds block is either torn or broken.
What are the most likely options, what type(s) of Olds block is (are) convertable to a 1987 TA? a small block to begin with, on a TA frame, right?
the moment we find a nr. on the block the answer will probably be there yet I would like to get into the works of this block as soon as possible..
thanks from a dutch 3rdgen-craze

i don't know of any olds block in any third gen. i know they put olds (403 cid) in the 2nd gens but as far as i know all third gen got chevy small blocks. 305 or 350 i think are the only small blocks for the third gen. but then again i don't know about the exports.

that's what I thought as well, that's why we're a bit puzzled here... which olds block would fit on the frame/in engine bay of a 87 TA? the moment we have the block out I ll make pics and try to post those.. will take some time though, and I would like to get some knowledge on this block before I have it out and would we would start to get it back into shape..

the only olds block i think gm was using back then was the 307 5.0. gm pretty much went to chevy engine to save money in the late 80's. if you have i 307 i would think someone put that in.

and oh yeah if it's a 307 then don't bother with it.

As already stated the only Olds V8 used during the '80s was the 307.As far as I know and read they weren't used in US 3rd Gens but as always export versions are different.Or it could have been a replacement for a blown motor(with a whole lot of work). What transmission are you using(200-4R possibly if auto). And the only "performance" version of it came in the G-Body 442(and maybe the Delta 88 2 door).

We definitely need pics to find out what happened..
Was this an export car or did it come from America originally? The reason I ask is because as a former military guy, we did some amazing stuff at the auto hobby shop on base and maybe that's where this craziness came from. Enlisted guys don't make much money and shipping an engine across the ocean is often out of the budget. There is always another junker around from someone else to get parts from, though...
No Olds motors were offered in export models either. Any Olds small block will fit under the hood... We have pics in evidence here at TGO...

The Olds motors weren't used in export F-bodies either. This is a swap... 100% guaranteed.
Infact most Oldsmobiles that came to Canada came with Chevy Motors.... While not exactly rare... 307's north of the boarder are "odd"
