This board has a great search feature.

I think that covers your question in full. Whats the 6th digit on your VIN?

Re: 1987 camaro with rare emblem

I believe it should be a 2, as the "Special Edition" cars were converted by ASC (the same people that made the factory verts) but they were special dealer ordered.

I am not entirely sure on the logistics but I assume that it may have been that in early 1987 model year Chevrolet had not yet completely geared up for the actual Camaro Convertibles. In 1986 & 1987 there were several Camaros & Firebirds which were converted by ASC as per a dealer request. WHat is probably strikingly interesting is from the information that I have seen and there is yet anything to discount this, that the Factory would make a T-top, the dealer would have it drop shipped to ASC then ASC would ship it to the dealer. The "Factory" Convertibles were very similar except after their conversion I have heard that they would be shipped back to the plant and then shipped to the dealership.

ASC has records of 1987+ only, they do not have any numbers for 1986 for either the Firebird nor the camaro.

Other than the 6th digit in the VIN the cars are identical in every way.

Mporeover what is also an interesting factoid (that I have yet to find a discrediting anything) is the Special ordered Camaro Convertibles were in 1986 & 1987 only, in 1988 I have yet to see any that were made this way. On the other hand the Firebird went from 1986 thru 1989 and none in 1990. The only reason for my assumption of Chevy not yet geared up is that ASC may have not wanted to step on GM's toes by selling the cars aftermarket and taking away from GM profit margins. Its sepculation but it would make complete sence.
