1985 Z28 Restoration Project

I've been reading this board for a while and thanks to the detailed information here I have gained the confidence to start my own restoration project. It will be slow going but I will document each step and should have new photos every week or so. If you have some advice or see me doing something wrong, please pipe in. I appreciate the input.

Re: 1985 Z28 Restoration Project

nice i would love to restore mine i also have an 85 z28 and finally got the engine modded the way i wanted it. Next would be the suspension and rear end then paint and interior but i'm not going to be done for years so i'm doing it little by little so i can still drive the car. I figured if I take my time and do it as I go it won't seem that I'm spending as much money since i'm spreading it out over time.

Doing the same here. Just small expenditures a month at a time. I'll wait for bonus and tax time for the larger expenses. Have been reading here often and getting engine rebuilding books from the library. Know the Chilton backward and forward now. I expect to pull the engine tomorrow. Torque arm bolt held me up last weekend. Will post pictures. Good luck on yours.

Re: 1985 Z28 Restoration Project

Just going to concentrate on the engine this winter and into the spring. I have no experience but I believe reading here and a lot of RTFM will help me build the engine correctly. I read two books on body repair and automotive painting and can tell that it will take more than reading. It looks like more of an artform. That will take practice and training therefore I'll take an auto body class before I start on that. You can see from the pictures that my car has a few dents and some saggy doors. I don't see any rust on the floopans but it is on the rear axle and rear suspension. I think that is just surface rust that can be sanded off and painted.

Being that this is the History/RESTORATION forum and we don't see much restoration here, post your progress here for others to see.

Re: 1985 Z28 Restoration Project

I'm currently taking pictures of the teardown because I drink a lot and won't remember how to put things back together again without the photos. Documenting everything on a separate website so as not to consume thirdgen's disk space and bandwidth with high-res photos of my ratty stuff. It may help others who are looking for what bolt/hose fits where. For pictures see the website in my signature. Will post another 30 pictures of my failed attempt at engine removal today.

if you drink alot shouldn't be a problem getting someone over to help LOL .... after 30 failed attempts at removing engine maybe time to abort mission and regroup and plan another attack LOL. ............ but hey good luck on the project guy.
