Is my car Rare???

Alright, I just bought a 1990 Trans Am for $1000. Great deal. The car needs some love but I need another project so I snagged it. I've been doing research and can't seem to find production numbers for this car though. I know that 1056 we made in 1990. I also know that there were T-Top, Hardtop, and Convertable versions. I also know that a lot of the T-Top cars were sent out to be turned into convertables. Here's my question though, why does mine have a sunroof? I can't seem to find anyone else with one. Is this rare? Where do I get replacement pieces. I got the car from my cousin and he was sitting on it one day (he's not too bright guys) and messed up something on the sunroof so it started leaking. Rather than let me look at it or tell me he decided to seal it with rtv. Yes he saved the interior but now I have to clean that up too. Oh well, just wondering what everyone else thought about this. I'm new to the F-Body crowd so I don't know too much but I know what I've read and I can't find another car like this one anywhere.

More than likely aftermarket. I dont think a single TA came with a sunroof stock. Just FYI The way you can tell its aftermarket is it normally has seals around the windows and its above the bodly line as opposed to a stock where its set in side the roof

Welcome!!

Re: Is my car Rare???

I figured it was because I hadn't read about one yet. Now I just have to figure out if I want to fix it and be different or pull it all out and restore the roof the way it was.

Well there is already a hole in your roof...I would just take it to an auto glass place and have them install a new sun roof, they are cheap probably wont cost you more than $150 for brand new everything installed.

According to ASC there were no Firebirds converted in 1990 As as for alot, there was only a total of about 600 made from 1987- 1989.

The sunroof is more than likely (about 99.9999%) that it was aftermarket. GM has nothing indicating a sunroof or moonroof for the F-cars. Like stated above, your probably better off getting a new sunroof installed OR get another hard top from a junkyard and have it put on your car. If you do a T-top conversion there is more involved than meets the eye.

Re: Is my car Rare???

I had a T/A that had a sunroof installed by the dealership. It was marked on the inside bezel "Webasto", which was the manufacturer. It was electric and very expensive (Mercedes uses Webasto as well). Depending on manufacturer, you might need to pull the headliner to find out who made it. Webasto is still in business, so parts are still available, so I was lucky.

I was told by a collector that if the option (sunroof, air conditioning) is dealer installed, it does not decrease, and sometimes increases the value of the car because of the rarity, as opposed to owner installed, which usually decreases the value, but you have to document it. Find the dealer who sold the car, and see if they have the records.

Good luck

TA

Re: Is my car Rare???

yep sunroofs are all aftermarket, even if a dealer installed em. I had a camaro that someone ruined with one, it was really hard to sell cause everyone that looked at it said its a nice car, I would have bought it if it wasn't for the sunroof. It's actually the same reason I never fixed it after it got hit in a parking lot, the sunroof just killed the resale value and shops wanted too much to fix the roof..
