My salvage 83 Trans AM

Hi folks,
Thought I'd share the latest addition to my all GM garage. It's a 1983 Trans AM that I picked up via an insurance auction. It's currently titled as salvage due to severe water damage. While the VIN (1G2AW87SxDNxxxxxx) indicates a 1983 it is wearing the 85-90 TA aero panels. Right now it looks like the carpet and seats were what got damaged due to the water. I haven't tried to fire up the LU5 yet and there's a bunch of aftermarket items tied into the ignition/wire harness, but I think it's worth saving. Here's what the cowl tag had to offer:
D 12A 2FS87 N xxxxxx
64C 19L 19U 55M E
AR9 CC1
LU5 N09 D80
xxxxxx xxxxxx

From what I've researched I think this breaks down as:
D = 1983 model year
12A = December, 1st week - I'm guessing of 1982
2FS87 = Pontiac, F-body, sports coupe
N = Norwood plant
64C = Camel Tan interior (?)
19L = Black primary color, lower
19U = Black primary color, upper
55M = Metalic Gold, accent color ?
E = Enamel paint
AR9 = seats (not sure what option)
CC1 = T-tops
LU5 = Cross-Fire Injection 5.0L
N09 = locking gas door
D80 = Rear deck spoiler

Here's a couple of pictures:

and the initial web gallery I've put together:
http://gallery.mac.com/tpisellijr#10...w=mosaic&sel=0

Enjoy,
Tony

Looks like a drug dealers car. Was there any paraphernalia in the hidden compartments?

Re: My salvage 83 Trans AM

Looks like you have a nice find but with a lot of work ahead.

64C is the camel tan interior as it's the same as my '83 Z28.You have the custom cloth interior with the standard reclining front bucket seats(AR9).

It's interesting Pontiac added the lower accent color and Chevrolet didn't for the Z28.

Also is LU5 actually stamped on the trim tag?If so there's another difference but then that might be a Norwood versus Van Nuys(mine is a Van Nuys build)deal.

somebody must have swapped T top versions on that car to the pin version, IIRC that is a hook style car and later years are pin style T tops.

Don't know about that but it does have its T-tops, I just pulled them as soon as I got the car home so it can start to dry out. The mildew on the carpet and seats is brutal.

No, we didn't find any paraphernalia but, my son is about $3.00 richer thanks to all the change we found when I started to pull the seats out.

It does have some odd additions though:
- a "shatter guard" auto glass protector,
- a superfox radar detector,
- what looks to be an ignition lock out (can't remember the name - Insurance Man - or something like that)
- an unknown yellow button under the dash,
- an unknown toggle switch on the console.

Lots of fun.

Thanks for the information about the interior, it's good to know. LU5 is stamped on the cowl tag. The tag looks like the way I posted it with the exception of the sequence number and the two lower numbers instead of the "xxxx". I'll try to post a picture of it soon.

Re: My salvage 83 Trans AM

So I started to remove the interior in order to get it to start drying out. I've only gotten the seats out so far. The rear passenger seat and the carpet underneath it were still soaked, in fact the rear seat started to drip when I pulled it out. I had to wear a mask when doing this as the mildew was just overwhelming. Here's the link to the page I put together:
http://web.mac.com/tpisellijr/83tran..._overview.html
and here are just a couple of shots:

and

Enjoy.

Yeah, having that wet carpet on the floor isn't going to help it any. Looks like you've got a solid car, you've just got your work cut out for you.

Re: My salvage 83 Trans AM

Good luck with the Resto, looks like a nice starting point.

Is that a NewJersey inspection sticker on the window? If it is from NJ you will want to check it out for rust/rot. (Wheel wells, rockers, seams, etc)

Yes it is a Jersey sticker in the window. In fact, while cleaning out the car I found an old "For Sale" sign with a phone number starting with a 908 area code and, I also found an old PathMark reciept from Garwood, NJ 07027. So it looks like the car, at one time was in north Jersy. There is a bit of rust on the bottom of the doors, where the outter skin is folded over, but that's about it so far.

On a more positive note, just for kicks this weekend I threw in a new battery and topped of the fluids before turning the key. Much to my surprise not only did it turn over but it started. After helping it keep going it eventually kept a rough idle. The check engine light is on and the temperature gauge didn't move so all is not great. I'm also having problems getting WinALDL to communicate with the ECM but hey, it starts and runs.

I know where that PathMark is and I am in the same 908 area code, haha.

Was that a Katrina car? I know a lot of people were buying up water damaged cars from Texas and surrounding areas and bringing them up north to sell them.

No, it's a Jersey car. It was tittled as Jersey Salvage when it went to auction. So far the only water damage I've found is the back seats and carpet. I've seen some Katrina salvage cars and most have a bunch of mud/water all over and in the vehicles. Although this one runs rough it does start and idle so it didn't injest any water.

Thanks about the car and garage; my wife is always amazed by the number of people who pull in our driveway when the doors are open just to see the garage. I just put the ceiling up 2 weekends ago so I can finally start to run some heat in it when I want to work in the winter.

I have to 2nd about the garage looking really nice.Not to mention the 2nd Gen tucked away in the corner and the 4th Gen next to your nice salvage 3rd Gen(can't tell what the other one is).

On the interior take good care of the seat belts as '83 tan versions are like gold.Even the seat belt guides are getting hard to find(though yours look different than mine).

Thanks for the tip about the interior parts; I've started to remove some of the panels and it's obvious that they've been removed before; numerous fasteners missing/broken. I'll try to post some pictures when I get a little further along.

As for the garage, here is a page showing it getting built when we did a big house renovation:
http://web.mac.com/tpisellijr/house/garage.html
The entire garage is 60' long and 40' deep, with the first 44' (left to right) enclosed and with 12' ceiling. The remaining 16' are for an RV port with a 14' ceiling.
That's actually a 1969 Corvette tucked away in the back corner. That car is in worse shape then the T/A. Here's the page for that car: http://web.mac.com/tpisellijr/69shark/69_corvette.html
The fourth gen is my '02 Z28. That's my daily driver with about 108k miles on it. Here's that car's page (no pictures though with the recent upgrade to Z06 style wheels):http://homepage.mac.com/tpisellijr/0...toAlbum35.html.
Also in the garage is an '86 Camaro sports coupe which I'm converting from its' LG4 setup to the ODB2-TPI setup; see the stickie in the TPI forum for how to do that. The block for that car is actually in the white bag you see behind the 4th gen. Now that I can heat the garage I'm hoping to start putting the engine back together within the next week or two. Two other cars are also usually in the garage as well; my wifes '03 Alero and out '99 Suburban (the family truckster).
Not in the garage right now are an '86 IROC that lacks an engine and transmission and needs a full blown restoration as well as an '83 Camaro sports coupe that I'm undecided on as far as what to do with.

This makes me sad.. I scraped an '83, the back seats, pass. Seat, and rear seat belts were like new... Depressing...

One of the center caps says "American Racing"; one of the spokes says "14 X 7"; another spoke says "OFF 0". Hope this helps.
