89 Formula Identification

I am looking at buying an 89 formula firebird. The RPO codes are missing. Is there a way to verify that its a formula versus a base firebird. Also, Where is the VIN located on the motor to be sure its the original motor

thanks Al

Re: 89 Formula Identification

The vin number is on the front of the block, stamped in a pad just in front of the head.

To identify if it's a Formula, check the VIN number. The VIN will tell you if it's a Firebird or a Trans Am. If it's a Firebird (NOT Trans AM) with a TPI V8 it's a Formula. If it's a 305 with TBI you'll have to look for the other clues, like the 16x8" wheels, bulged hood, wrap around spoiler, etc. If it's a TBI 305 and there's no SPID there aren't any guarentees since everything else can be easily switched over.
