A Couple of ?'s for restoration gurus
A Couple of ?'s for restoration gurus
I just bought a 1984 Camaro and wanted to decode the RPO's, and low and behold....wrong danm arm rest in the car, VIN doesn't match.
Is there any other way to still decode and find RPO's by the VIN?
At least tell me the engine code for "G".

G is the L69. It was the best engine offering in 1984.

'84s still used the standard trim tag(as far as I know)on the top center of the radiator support. This will give you build date/plant,interior/exterior paint codes and types along with some other basic info. You may luck out and come across a build sheet in her(look under/in the seats, under the carpet sections and in the door panels).

Provided the center console glove box lid hasn't been replaced with one from another car, there is a label on the underside with the RPOs for all installed items. 1984 was the first year for this.

You may have allready checked, but did you look in the storage compartment in the back? That is where my codes are located on the inside lid.

Well I checked with our parts deptartment today. The VIN is too old for the RPOs to show up. On the other hand I found alot of parts are still available from GM and VPI(?), a vintage parts locator.

Re: A Couple of ?'s for restoration gurus
. I'm saying the RPO's I decoded were from a V6 camaro. That is why I asked what the engine digit on the VIN was. It has a 305 in there with Edelbrock, performer carb and intake. Also upon inpection the 700r4 has been removed and replaced with what appears to be a th350. Interior is fair, panels painted from brown(saddle?) to black. Paint on the door panels is kinda crappy,as in not completly covering the brown, but it has this cool charcoal looking color now. Oh it has late third gen wheels, the ones that the GMC Sonoma ZQ8 were designed after.
Since I'm here does the hatch area have that big of gap between hatch and roof? Or is there soposed to be a seal or some sort?

I have dealt with a few 84's that were either mine or a friends and all of them had the build sheet under the back seat. Cant guarantee yours will be there but its a good place to start.

I think that the Sonoma wheels were the same wheel, I ahve not ever compared them side by side, but they are darn close, but the center caps are different, the Camaro has the fake Single race bolt but the GMC I think is flat, otherwise I suspect they are the same. With my luck on a statement after that someone will tell me that the GMC ones were 15".

I agree, at this point that would be your best bet to truly know and have all the codes. Except, regarding this bet, your odds are stacked against you with regards to finding one. But slim is still better than none.
Re: A Couple of ?'s for restoration gurus
Thanks alot guys for the help, but after real carefull inspection. I don't think a restoration to stock is in order for this one
. It has a fiberglass hood of an Iroc. Interior is almost all original except the center console lid, but the seats are a ugly(imo) checkered material. It's been painted a couple of times. Soposed to be Brown metallic.
I think more of a resto mod for this one.
Don't worry the ZQ8 wheels are 16" I have an S-10 also.

The Fiberglass hood was an original thing in 1982 & 1983, not sure if they went into 1984 however. you stated that it was a IROC style hood, we would actually have to see the original pix first to determing if it was a factory or an aftermarket.

Re: A Couple of ?'s for restoration gurus
^^ now that you mention it, it looks more like the 82-style hood, no holes for louvers or blisters, just a hole at the end or the scoops.
I guess it would've helped if I did post a pic
(man I love that smiley). Sorry if the quailty is not that great it was taken by a phone
Oh and guess what I just found a passenger side door of a later model, complete with all weatherstrip, door panel, power window regulator, window, and mirror sitting at my uncle's shop under a bunch of hoods.

Re: A Couple of ?'s for restoration gurus
That looks like an 82-84 hood, Nose, and GFX. Those wheels are not 1982-1984 though.
Re: A Couple of ?'s for restoration gurus
It's a CFI hood, the L69 hood would have not had the openings at the rear for the functional intake. CFI had the flip up doors, L69/LG4 had stationary pieces to look like the doors but if removed there are just 2 holes on either side for the locating pins.
Brown and charcoal were pretty common early colors, and the seats usually weren't as nice as the later cars.
Probably not worth restoring, but a good place to start a project.
PS, take a real close look at that hood before you get on the interstate. There was a recall on some of them because they like to come apart at the seams. Hoodpins might be real cheap insurance.
