82 Firebird Air Dam
Hi Everyone,
I don't know why I get stuck with these weird problems, It just seems to be one thing after another. Maybe it is because it is an 82 car.
I am looking to replace the air dam on my car so I order one for 82-90 Firebirds but when I go to fit it I find it is 1.5 inch too long on either side plus four of the fixing holes don't line up. I checked the part number on the original one which is 10017072. but it comes up with part not found on any gm part number databases I have looked at. The part number on the one I ordered is 10017673 and this does apear on the databases. Is there something different on the 82 cars?. Can anyone make any suggestion.
Gerry.

Re: 82 Firebird Air Dam
Is it a Firebird or a Trans am?? There are two different part numbers depending on what you have. The part number you have listed is wrong...look again at the part. I bet the last "0" is actually a "6" if this is correct I guess I answered my first question
My parts book lists 10017672 as the Firebird air dam, and 10017673 for the Trans Am. The only reason I can think of why it's too long is because on the Trans Am there are deflectors at the front wheels that act as GFX on the '82 Trans Am's. The air dam bolts into the bottom of the deflectors and meets flush to the edges of the air dam ...the Firebirds don't have the GFX, so it would probably be shorter. Anyone else care to confirm the length?
Where did you buy the one you got?? The Firebird air dam doesn't show up on GM Parts Direct, but the TA one does. Most likely the Firebird style is discontinued and probably harder to find unless you goto a junkyard.

Another vote for Modern Day Muscle...assuming they have the one that you need. I think I remember seeing the one piece ones on there though. My 3 piece for my 87 was only like $30, and came with new hardware and everything... VERY pleased with it, and with MDM service.

Re: 82 Firebird Air Dam
Thanks for your reply guys. My car is a 2.8L Firebird. I bought the deflector on ebay as it is the only place I could get someone to ship to Ireland. That is the correct part number (10017672) On my deflector it has a tear where the part number is and I thought the 6 was a 0. It is very misleading for sellers to state that 10017673 fits all 82-89 Firebirds.
Thanks for clearing this up for me.

Re: 82 Firebird Air Dam
Get used to it...especially on Ebay. I have actually argued with people who claim certain parts will fit all years, and it just isn't true. I have actually been told that I didn't know what I was talking about when someone was selling a camaro shifter plate and said it will fit on a Firebird. I just ignore people like this and don't buy from them. You just have to know these cars inside and out to know all the little differences. There are a lot actually. '82-'84 is usually grouped separately from 89+, and usually 90-92 is grouped together as far as part compatibility goes. It's when sellers try to group all parts together for '82-'92 is when it gets misleading.

I have a question that hopefully you can answer. Can these deflectors or GFX be fitted to a standard 82 Firebird so I could use the 10017673 air dam on my car and if so where could I buy a set.
Thanks.

Re: 82 Firebird Air Dam
I'm sure they could be fitted, since they came on '82 Trans Am's and S/E's. You might just have to drill a hole or two but that is it. If your looking for a set you would have to try ebay or a junkyard...or maybe the classifides here. Beware ebay though, since these parts are used for Knight Rider "KITT" conversions, the prices usually go sky high and it makes it hard for people to buy that actually need them.

Re: 82 Firebird Air Dam
I saw in the classic industries catalog that they had a listing for
82-84 Trans am, Part Number G4749
82-90 Standard/ Formula, part number G4789.
I gave them a call to see if any of these had the GM part number 10017672 which is the one on my car. They couldn't get a reference for that but what they said was that this part number has been super seeded with 10118485 which is the 82-90 Standard/ Formula, part number G4789.
Would the formula cars have the same air dam as the standard Firebird.
Have you got a listing for this 10118485 air dam in your GM parts catalog to see what years it fits.
Thanks.

Re: 82 Firebird Air Dam
I checked some old posts on this website and some has posted that air dam 10118485 is a replacement for 10017672. This fits the standard Firebird and the Formula cars. What is the difference between a Formula and a Trans Am?

Re: 82 Firebird Air Dam
well they didn't have formula's in '82, but a formula is basically a firebird with pretty much the same options as a trans am...appearance wise they looked like a firebird without the ground effects. You could get the same engines as a trans am also, and for the most part sold for less than a trans am.
