Matching numbers

How do i match the numbers on my engine to the car? i know where to find the number on the engine but not the body. SImple answer isnt it? haha

It's actually the simple questions that can drive you nuts.The engine code/build date/plant and sequential part of the VIN are stamped into the front passenger side block deck(provided the block hasn't been decked).

My opinion is since GM went with using parts from all GM cars the days of matching numbers went south. So it would be a waste of time trying to look for anything, it is not like the 1st gen Camaros as example/

Not sure if all third gens were this way but if you ever remove the blower motor housing and evp. the entire vin should be stamped about mid into the firewall. Looking at the pictures I took of the engine and transmission have the last 9 of the vin staped on them.

My 87 has matching numbers... They still do this today AFAIK as a means of theft recovery although I doubt that they ever find any engines out there...

Are you looking for the VIN on the body? What about the one on the dash? Also I think they are in the center console.
