88 GTA advice
88 GTA advice
I'm hoping to pick up an '88 Trans Am GTA tomorrow, 5.7L engine with 170k miles on it. Currently driving a '00 v6 Mustang, so other than boatloads more power, what can I expect with this car? Anything I should know about, things I should think about replacing immediately, performance suggestions, etc? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated
Re: 88 GTA advice
Make sure its a real GTA first! People will tell you its a 350 when it's actually a 305...and some Trans Am's are transformed into GTA's by just throwing on emblems...
Does it have no fender cut outs? Does it have ALL the GTA badges? Does the RPO sheet say Y84? Are all the Emblems gold? Does it say GTA on the dash pouch?
And also make sure it's got a 350...check to see if it says 5.0 L or 5.7 L on the emissions sticker under the hood...if it's 5.7 L then its a 350. Also you can check the RPO sheet to find the code L98 that will tell you it's a 350, and on the VIN if it has an "8" in it then it's a 350.
Once these two things are figured out your good to go!
Oh and don't mess with the Idle air set screw...it wont change your idle (Computer controlled)
Enjoy, low end torque on the 350 is fantastic
Heres a page that might help you out a bit more too!

Re: 88 GTA advice
WElcome to the boards,
As all things stated above. Look for Rust in the normal places, rear wheel wells usually are a good tell as sometimes they are not fixed correctly with the little highlight line. Check the floorboards etc for rust... And if the Front strut towers have rust on them, by all means I would not seriously consider the car unless you intend on buying another and using this one as a parts car.
Good luck
