Looking for some pictures of LU5 hood

I recently picked up an 83 Z28 with the "glass" hood and was thinking of doing a ram air similar to the LU5 option, but I can not find any pictures of one anywhere on the web.I would just like to see one and maybe some info on how it worked.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Jeff

Re: Looking for some pictures of LU5 hood

Take a look at my post in this thread for a brief description of how the CFI hood worked electrically.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/elec...tml?highlight=

I presume you do not have an LU5 engine in your 83 Z28, but a carbed engine Some folks have moded their hood to work with a carb setup. Just remember one thing. The solenoid that opens the hood flaps is not rated for continuous operation. If you power it up for more that 100 sec (value assumed, based on commercial units) it will burn up the solenoid.

The "ram air" action was created by a seal on the underside of the hood that sealed to the top of the air cleaner. You can see the seal marks on the air cleaner in the photo below. I am also posting a photo of the underside of the hood. If you want some other views, let me know.

Re: Looking for some pictures of LU5 hood

Thanks for the info and pics.So it works on a electric solenoid huh.I am thinking of trying something with a vacuum solenoid like the cowl induction from the 60's and 70's.Just what I need, another project.I bought the Camaro as a toy/tire burner.I am actually building a 64 Buick Riviera, complete body off Hot Rod,but I know its going to be a 3 to 4 year project,so I decided to get something to remind me of why I am building a hot rod in the first place.Always liked the 3rd gen Camaros.I almost bought an 82 pace car in 83 or 84 until I called my insurance company. No way I could afford the car and be able to drive it also.I was only 18 at the time.Car payment would have been around a hundred a month, insurance would have been the same if not higher. So flash forward 25 years or so and walah I have a Camaro.Once again thanks for the info.Jeff
