1990 Iroc Question

Did all 1990 Irocs with the L98 350 TPI Motor have rear discs?Or was it possible to get a drum rear?

Re: 1990 Iroc Question

It is possible to get drum rear due to limited quantities of discs. I believe the L98 was required to have disc, but due to quantities, they may have come with drums.

Re: 1990 Iroc Question

Reason I ask is that I found a 90 Iroc L98 car in the junkyard and I have been looking for a 90-92 disc/disc prop valve. The iroc had no rpo sticker but the rear end housing was still there. However someone had gutted the carrier and the axles...etc were gone too.Im hoping it was a rear disc car going on the assumption of what was missing off the rear.Im figuring that not many people are going to gut a drum brake rear when they are so common

Re: 1990 Iroc Question

Dont have to go by the RPO codes only, look for a number 8 in the eight position on the vin tag. If it's there, it came with a L98.

Re: 1990 Iroc Question

The carrier set doesn't affect the brake setup, does it? The car probably had the B/W 9 bolt setup with POSI, so it was gutted. I'm not sure how to determine the rest. Just because the car came with L98 does not mean the car had disc in 90. If I remember, there was a shortage. If I'm wrong, someone correct me. The RPOs would definately tell you what brake setup it had, so without that and the axles, I'm not sure how you would know the rest. I'm not a brake expert so I can't provide that expertise

Re: 1990 Iroc Question

I just pulled this up on the thirdgen main page 1990 camaro facts.......

All 350 IROC-Z's were required to have one of the G92 packages in 1990.

G92 with air conditioning (C60):

Optional axle ratio (305/3.42, 350/3.23) Rear disc brakes (J65) Performance exhaust system (N10) (dual catalytic converters) Engine oil cooler (KC4)
5.0 liter TPI (LB9) with 5 speed gets revised cam for 230hp rating.

G92 with out air conditioning (C41) in addition to above adds 1LE performance package consisting of:

Fog lamp delete Aluminum driveshaft (JG1) Aluminum spare wheel with smaller spare tire (N64) Larger (11.86 inch) front rotors and PBR Australian built HD front dual piston aluminum calipers
Special swinging fuel pickup in gas tank and special 18 gallon baffled fuel tank for fuel pickup down to .5 gallon reserve to prevent fuel starvation in hard cornering..............

So from what im reading up above it appears that all 1990 350 Irocs were G92 cars and had rear disc brakes.

Re: 1990 Iroc Question

This is a tad bit late, but I have an '88 IR0C-Z with drums. The digit 8 is an 8 in the VIN.....

Do I have to keep repeating myself? Unless someone says different, I believe there was a shortage of disc setups in 1990 causing the mandatory disc option to be overruled. There is a chance of getting a drum setup in 1990 if there was a shortage!
