Hey guys, I haven't been around much since I sold my 87 IROC 3 years ago. I'm currently looking around for another IROC and I believe I found a good deal locally. Its an 88 IROC 5.7 hardtop thats medium orange metallic with a rebuilt motor. I hope to go look at it tonight but we'll see. I know that color was only availible in 88 and 89. Production numbers say that 3,010 camaros were painted that color in 88 but anyone know how many IROC's were painted that color?
My understanding was that it was ONLY an IROC color. ...meaning they were all Irocs.
....I could be wrong on that though....

I dont know if you are talking about just camaros, but my 1988 Formula a Medium Orange Metallic original...
I didn't think it was an IROC only color, the dealer brouchure doesn't mention any color restrictions other than no yellow on IROCs for 88. Anyway, the car was in worse shape than I thought. Clear is faded in the usual spots, front bumper cover is damaged, LR quarter is damaged, wheel center caps missing, tires dryroted a bit, horn and radio missing, incorrect speedo, drivers seat torn. Seller didn't metion any of this and wouldn't budge on the price so looks like the hunt will continue

Probably also a stripped or stolen car at some point
since good speedo was replaced.
First thing to get lost.

That's presumptive. It could've just broken and been replaced by an incorrect unit.Originally Posted by jaykar

Along with the Iroc caps which are getting hard to find.

Correct on the 3,010. It was called Medium Orange Metallic (colour code: 63 / WA 9188). Unfortunatly, that total includes both the IrocZ and the Sport Coupe, for which it was both available. I have never heard of it broken down as per model.Originally Posted by IROCZ87MD

Unfortunately, that's often the caseI have never heard of it broken down as per model.
.....but on a side note, with regard to the orange metallic. As I mentioned, I was under the impression it was ONLY for the Iroc, but I certainly wasn't stating that as fact, only what I had heard. Can someone CONFIRM, that it wasn't Iroc specific? Are we SURE?
....always looking to keep the ole mental database as accurate as possible!!!!
Thanks guys!

I know this is an old thread, but I'm hoping the original poster has their notifications turned on. I believe I now own the car in question and would like to speak to the OP about any info they may have as I'm trying to piece together the history of the car. At the moment it is fully restored and back to original. So, if the OP sees this post, please shoot me a message or reply to this thread.

According to the almighty White Book it was available on the IROC, IROC Convertible, SC, and SC Convertible.
So it is hard to tell...
They are unusual, I have only seen one 3rd gen painted that color... The Orange Metallic replaced the Yellow mid production year 1988. I think the color is actually almost identical to the Sunset orange on the 2000-2002 4th gens.

I haaaate med orange metallic!!!
Seriously though, it's the color of Oklahoma dirt. If the smell of Indian food were a color. Sales and rarity reflect popularity. You don't see them often BECAUSE they're ugly.

I'm not sure how accurate that is. Yellow and silver are both very popular yet have lower production numbers. Med orange metallic doesn't stand out and "pop" but when the sun hits it just right I'll take it over any other color any day. Unlike the more abundant flame red, which always looks blah to me.Originally Posted by Drew

Back to the reason I bumped this thread. I'm 99% certain that this is the car the OP was talking about. The condition and location of the car match up 100%. I just thought it would be neat for the OP to see the car finished. I bought it from the seller back in 2010 and chose to have it fully restored because it's a well optioned car in an uncommon color. It had the typical clearcoat peel and other wear but it was straight and had no rust.

One of my stops was May-Nix Chevy in Kingsville Texas where an '88 IROC in Medium Orange sat in the showroom and always demanded my attention. I remember drooling over the car and the fact that a 350 engine was available in my dream car. The pics of your restored car took me back to that time, thanks for sharing.

Saw this one in a salvage auction a while back...350/t-top car too.

From the looks of it, this was actual mileage.

Ck out that steering wheel.....either gripping it to brace for the big slow down or flattened it with their body.

That's horrible. Hands or chest, that ending at the steering column did not feel good.
Driving lesson learned...your hands steer the car to where your eyes are looking. If you don't want to run into the tree, don't fixate on it. Don't know that's what happened here...just sayin'...

I'd be willing to bet the steering wheel was flattened by the driver's death grip. A 200lb person exerts a ton of force on impact. I was involved in a jet-ski accident last summer and at only 35MPH I twisted the handlebars like a pretzel.

Iroc I'd like to introduce you to solid, stationary object.
"....oak tree you're in my way...."

it only came out in the year 1988 and was used for both the IrocZ and firebird

The 1988 Pontiac Firebird Formula came in the same code 63U Orange Metallic color.
One year color.
Only a Formula color and only 404 units built - not sprayed on base Fireird, TA, or GTA.
Nice job on your IROC. Looks fantastic.

haha.......back from a few years ago.......from....even a few years earlier.
Nice job on the car! Always loved that color. ....to touch on my comment from 8 YEARS AGO!!!! - I still have yet to see this color on any Camaro other than an Iroc. While not TONS of 'em, I still see orange Irocs from time to time.
