How much is this worth?

My buddy is selling a 87 trans am. i am unsure if it is a gta. it has 102,000 miles and has the 305 TPI with the automatic trans. the engine is missing the part of the intake and is in need of a tune up and new battery. it last ran last spring and has been parked outside since April. it needs new tires all around and breaks. the body is in decent shape with almost no rust, no major dents or bangs, floors are solid. the a/c and heater do not work. it was unprofessionally painted white last winter. it has not passed inspection since 2005. the t-tops do leak a bit and the interior is a mess, the seats are ripped and stained and missing both door panels. he bought it for $800 in 2006 and he only painted it with no restoration. he wants $2,000 firm for it, and i have a STRONG feeling it is too high. so my question is HOW MUCH IS THIS WORTH?

thanks guys

Re: How much is this worth?

I'd say maybe 1500, since it's not in running condition. It doesn't look like it's a GTA either, since it has the T/A fenders with the scoops.

Re: How much is this worth?

Let's see, he paid $800 for it, put a poor $500 paint job on it, did nothing else, now it doesn't run, and he wants to sell it for $2,000 firm? Sounds like a good racket to me.

I'd say a fair price would be $800 plus whatever the materials (not labor) on the paint cost him.

Re: How much is this worth?

IMO any car that is running and safely driveable Is worth atleast $1,000.Considering its not running and needs brakes and tires, the rims dont match, its missing body parts and the interior is trashed....I MIGHT give him 500 bucks for it.

I think you can find a much better deal. For example,I paid $2500 for my car in 2004.It ran great,305 tpi iroc,ZR1/SS wheels with new falken 245/45/17 tires, interior was great except the headliner and sunvisors where missing. No rust.I changed the rear brakes a year later and replaced the front pads last week. They still had plenty of pad left on them.Thats 500 more than what he is asking

I see better deals than that ona fairly regular basis in my area.If you are looking,be patient, wait till you see a better deal.Thats what I`d do.

Re: How much is this worth?

I agree with shadygrady that is about a $ 500 dollar car. If he paid for that paint job that is his problem. I have seen better paint jobs come out of a Krylon can. Just wait you will find a nice one if you just look for a little while. I bought a 87 GTA with t-tops last July for $ 600 bucks and I drove it home. It needs a paint job but its got a great body. Just do some more looking.

Re: How much is this worth?

I seriously don't understand why people come on here and ask what a car is worth when they know what was paid for the car, it's in poor shape and the owner didn't do anything to it. You already know the thing is trashed. The car is worth what you are willing to pay. Would you buy it if we all said it's worth $3500? If you have a STRONG feeling it's too high, then it's too high!!

Re: How much is this worth?

I have to chime in.
1) its NOT a 1987 car, or at least the engine may have been upgraded to the 1988 - 1992 style serp belt system.
1a) The Intake tells me that it is probably a 1988 or 1989.
2) you have to ask yourself... 102K miles, really means nothing as everything can be fixed or replaced and the car can be as reliable as a new car... HOWEVER the car is by no means perfect, I would think the car with those miles would be worth about $8000 tops right now IF the car was PERFECT PERFECT show quality.
2A) take that number 8K and start subtracting how much it would cost to actually get it up to snuff...
2A1) ANOTHER paint job $5K to have someone do it $1500 to DIY
2A2) INTERIOR - $1000 to $2000 depending on the route you take.
2A3) Engine - A rebuilt Engine is about $3000 or so, or $1000 to DIY... it has been a LONG time since I rebuilt an engine so it would probably be more.
2A4) Transmission - 900 - 1500 to have someone rebuild it.
Basically it all adds up... you can still find some good deals out there, but they are getting more scarce... Try looking in Autotrader.com

Good luck... Personally that car would be close to a parts car for me from what I can tell.

Re: How much is this worth?

. Pretty much treat it like a parts car, cause that may be all it is. Many times I've bought a car and at the same time asking myself that if it doesn't work out as planned - could I part it out for amount paid. That's a worst case scenario but works for me. Later.

Re: How much is this worth?

Thanks guys for the responses. i offered $500 cash max (that's as much as i have) for the car and he laughed in my face. he is convinced it is a GTA and is worth alot of money, and i have tried to explain to him nicely that the car is only worth what people are willing to pay for it. he had other offers from 300-800 and turned them all down. Oh and sorry, he told me its a 87 last week but today he told me it is a 88. So with the little cash i have i will keep looking for the right one for a little winter project.

Thanks again,
