1984 with 1985 fenders?

Hi to all
I just bought an 84 trans am...black with the gold striping.
damaged front DS fender.
and motor problem
what I'm finding is that all the 84 fenders I locate do not have the gta vents on the side like my car does. Only for 85+.
is this just a glitch or do you think the fenders were upgraded at some point.
vin checks out as an 84.

I'm prolly just missing something but can't see it.

the car....

Re: 1984 with 1985 fenders?

Are you talking about the air extractors behind the front wheel on the fender? All '82-90 Trans Ams have them. Regular Firebirds and Trans Am GTAs didn't get them.

Re: 1984 with 1985 fenders?

thanks for clarifying
I'm pretty new to this american car scene.
Have a 2000 base firebird but always wanted a KITT style.
I hope to learn alot about my car on this forum.

the thing is that when I searched online for a new fender...all the 84 or earlier had no hole for vent.....only 85+.

thanks alot for the info.
I have much to learn.

Re: 1984 with 1985 fenders?

Yes, all the '82-'90 Trans Am fenders had the vent in them. However, '82-'84 and '85-'90 fenders are slightly different. The upper mounting hole on '82-'84 cars extends out a little further on the earlier fenders. Because of that, you can't use an '82-'84 fender on later cars but you can use '85-'90 fenders on earlier cars. So you will be fine with any '82-'90 Trans Am fender.

Re: 1984 with 1985 fenders?

But the '82-'84 vent is different than the '85-'92 vent. So when you remove and discard the damaged fender from your '84, be sure to keep its vent so you can re-install it in place of the vent from the '85-'92 fender.
