In my area, one reason for the low prices are the conditions of these cars. People just drive the hell out of them and beat them to death. 200,000 mile cars are common and even if the body is clean the interior is trashed. Anyone who has ever owned or helped someone with a thirdgen knows when they come across one for sale and it mentions "needs a little work" automatically knows blood will have to be spilled. It just makes it hard to justify buying a beat up car for 5 grand when one can purchase a car less than 6 years old, under a hundred thousand miles, and has working ac (yes I know some thirdgen's ac still works) for the same price.

For me cars cannot be an investment. It takes some joy out of it. I know when the day thirdgens are no longer affordable my interest will switch to the next rust bucket to tinker with. Lucky for me there are still a lot of broken down camaro's and trans ams to play with.
