Re: Year of Radio change?
From '82 right to '92, the style of the headunit was always very similar, with a few subtle differences being the intro of the CD player and of coarse the Berlinetta "high-tech" look. The '91 brochure is a good example of usual looking radio/tape player and the newer CD player.

Here's a good link for having a look at the brochures throughout the years. Sales literature isn't always 100% accurate, but it gives you a good idea.

That's interesting.... The U1A CD player offered in the Firebird is different than the Camaro unit.. I managed to score the correct Pontiac CD player from a boneyard.. (See image below).. This is how they appear in the 1990 owner's manual and my '90 Firebird Helm's manual....

I believe, (but don't know for sure) that the CD player first became available as an option in the 1989 model year.

^^^ I didn't know the 1990 Pontiac CD players were different. The 1989 owners manual has dots instead of numbers on the station preset buttons and it says both auto dnr and auto loudness.
The numbers would seem to make more sense than the dots.

That's even MORE interesting....
I went back and looked in my 1990 Firebird owner's manual and the picture there shows dots on buttons just like your radio... But, my 1990 Helms Firebird service manual shows numbers on the buttons...
I never noticed that before. Thanks for pointing it out. They must have changed this sometime during the 1990 model year, OR, they might have used the same picture in the 1990 manual that they used in the 1989 manual.
Ya learn something new every day
