84 T/A -- Transition year?

Hey guys,

I've been wondering about this for some time but was 84 a transition year? Foir example, I've been wanting to relube my speedo cable because my speedo is bouncing. The problem I am running into is that I can't find the transducer. I have ONE cable running from the transmission up into the firewall and to the speedometer.

83's had a transducer. 85's do not.

that's just one example of some of the items I've found that aren't meshing with my chiltons for an 84...

Another is the fact that I have an Idle stop solonoid on my Carb. all my books, Autozone, checker, advanced auto, everyone, comes up with "there is no idle stop solonoid on an 84...but there is on an 85. For 83 it's called something different and doesn't look anything like what I've got.

I wish I had started cataloging them but, if any of you could confirm or prove this thought wrong, I'd be very appreciative.

Get a factory 1984 Pontiac service manual. Chiltons/Haynes/Autozone try to cover too many model years with the same book.

1984 is the first year for the electronic cruise control. There is no transducer. '83 was the last year for that. '84 has a small cruise control ECM behind the passenger side of the dash. It is a little black plastic box.

1984 also most certainly had an idle stop solenoid. Auto and manual transmissions had them. The emissions label on the radiator support even has directions for setting the idle stop "energized" engine RPM speed.

THanks Dens, I really appreciate it. Where can I get one of those service manuals?

You can also check eBay. Frequently they appear on there. In fact, here is one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/1984-Pontiac-Fir...3286.m20.l1116

I can't recommend, or not recommend, the above. I'm not familar with the seller. But that is what the 1984 Pontiac Firebird shop manual looks like.

You might want to hold out, as the eBay history shows there was 2 others on there for less than half the price of the one shown above.

Of course, you can still get a brand new copy - for ~97.25, direct from Helm Publishing:

I should have mentioned that you can actually go to many local libraries and in many cases they have the books on the shelf for reference.

Most Medium sized or larger libraries should have it for you. You might have to go to the main branch, but it is worth a shot.

Re: 84 T/A -- Transition year?

Every year seems to be a "transition year" in one regard or another when you get into the small details. They don't seem to hold up all changes for new model years, which makes a lot of sense from a manufacturing standpoint. It does make it a little tough when it comes to servicing and restoring though, especially when you factor in all the temporary deviations that were made to deal with parts shortages, supplier changes, etc.
