Looking For a Thid Gen, Help! ????
Looking For a Thid Gen, Help! ????
Not sure if this is the right place, but new member, first post and am trying to get some insight.
I am looking to pick up a third gen to add to my collection. Avid camaro fan, but never did get a chance to own a third gen and really want to fix that.
I am looking for an IROC era car, 85 - 90, but need some background and help on what would be considered the best of the run to pick up. I am leaning to 87 right now with a 350.
I currently have a 75 LT and have owned three others in the past. two second gens and a 4th. Will soon have another Z28 4th gen and my 2010 SS.
I am trying to make a low bubget generations collection. At this point I have everything but first and third.
Any help would be very greatly appreciated.
If I put this in the wrong spot, my apologies. Still trying to learn the organization.
By the way, you guys have some really beautiful cars on here!! I can't wait to have my own.
Thanks!

Re: Looking For a Thid Gen, Help! ????
My preference is a 88-90 iroc. If i ever buy another iroc it will HAVE to be an 89 L98 G92 car with less than 50K on the clock. There's one for sale here in MN but he wants ALOT of money for it, But not 18,000 like the previous post.
Re: Looking For a Thid Gen, Help! ????
Nice looking car, but way over my budget. I am just trying to do some research to find out what would be the best model year to look for. Not quite ready to buy yet until I can get some solid info on the best way to go. Don't really care about rare or collectible, just a solid car that would be the best year of the run.
I do love the car and have seen pics of it on other threads. Very good job keeping it up.
Thanks

What differences on the '89 make it a better car than the previous years?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Re: Looking For a Thid Gen, Help! ????
Sorry i can't beleive i didn't explain that in my post!
L98 is the 350 tuned port injection introduced in 87. You could ONLY get an Automatic with the 350.
G92 is a "performance" package. It consisted of (please correct me if im wrong guys) Dual Cats, Rear Discs, a 3.42 gear ratio, And a 145 mph speedo.
Now i like the model year 89 for a number of reasons: It looks good (all camaros do
), It was the last year for no airbag, last year of the square dash, first year for VATS (a security feature), And the TPIs got rid of the cold start injector.
But remember it's YOUR money and will be the car YOU drive and care for, so in the end its still all your choice!

The above mentioned 3.42 gears were only available with the 5 speed. The gear ratios are 3.23 or 3.27 for automatic G92 optioned cars and 3.42 or 3.45 for 5 speed cars. The reason for the 3.23 or 3.27 gearing is tied to the 10 bolt or the 9 bolt Borg-Warner rear ends.

Re: Looking For a Thid Gen, Help! ????
Scotts car is well.. Awesome! :hail:
It will really depend on what your after, I do not know how much of a difference an L98 will make in the future based on year alone. Here are some things to consider
Camaro's
1987-1989 you could get T-tops with the 350, 1989 being by far the most popular year for the combination.
Personally I would look for one like Scotts that had BOSE, then chances are you would have gotten just about all of the other options like Power windows, locks Cruise etc...
1987 the IROC was an OPTION for the Z28...
1988 + had the serpentine belts. Z28 was no longer available by itself, you could only get a Z28/IROC in 1988 thru 1990.
1989 - 1992 the 9th injector was dropped, they also changed the fuel injectors, unfortunately the injectors appear to fowl more easily than the 1987 & 1988, causing the engine to run rough.
1990 - 1992 T-tops were no longer available with the L98 (350)
1990 was a partial production year, they only made the IROC thru the end of 1989 so production is limited.
1991 Production started in February of 1990, the IROC went to Dodge and the Z28 returned. The Hi-rise Wing spoiler was introdued, love it or hate it, definitely an acquired taste personally. They also changed the hood blisters...
NOTE: You could not get a Manual with the 350, do not be fooled, none were made, many people either swapped a 350 in for a 305 or swapped in a Manual trans...
Look at the VIN, make sure it is an ( 8 ) 1G1FP218 for 1987 - 1989, and 1G1FP238 for 1990 - 1992.
I am not 100% on this, but I think for the most part all L98's got the performance gear ratio (3.27 from 1987 - 1990, or 3.23 from 1990 - 1992) there was a mid year change from the B&W 9 Bolt to the Saginaw Gear early in 1990 IIRC.
My personal favorite year is the 1989, It has the hottest cam, I honestly got 26 Mpg on the highway in my convertible 350, when it is just me (no passengers or luggage).
Hope that helps

Re: Looking For a Thid Gen, Help! ????
I may settle for a first gen project and restore it to get where I want. Unfortunately I missed the entire third gen run being overseas in the Military and am just very much behind the power curve on these models.
I really appreciate the help so far and any additional information to help me will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Looking For a Thid Gen, Help! ????
Honestly for 1985 & 1986 Chevrolet had the following models
-SC aka Sport coupe
-Z28 - An SC option
-IROC-Z - a Z28 option
-Berlinetta
1987 was like 1985 & 6 but with some minor changes
-SC aka Sport coupe
-RS - An option on the Sport coupe in limited areas
-LT - An option on the Sport coupe
-Z28 - An option on the SC
-IROC-Z - a Z28 option
1988
-SC aka Sport coupe
-RS - An option on the Sport coupe, again in limited areas
-Z28 - Automatically upgraded to IROC-Z
1989 - 1990
-RS - replaced SC as base model
-Z28 - Automatically upgraded to IROC-Z
1991 - 1992
-RS - no other packages
-Z28 - no other packages
So technically the Z28 never went away, but you could not get "just" a Z28, you automatically got the IROC... I think it had to do with trends and the fact that the Z28 would have been more costly due to the different color ground fx.. more paints to mix & match.
