I moved this post of yours from a thread of someone's build on a 1988 GTA as I don't think they had anything in common.
To answer your question, according to Frankie's GTA website (http://www.gtasourcepage.com) - who has the figures on GTA productions - there were 644 out of 8,470 1989 GTAs that came in the gunmetal metallic color.
