I see that reproduction seat covers in correct Pallex cloth are finally available for Firebirds, it's about time. Now how about reproduction seat foam? From searching it doesn't look like anything is available, but maybe I missed a source.

My seats in my 91 Formula are still in really good shape, but the foam in the lower half of the seats has gotten a bit flat and I can feel the steel frame rubbing on the cover. It'd be nice to be able to just get reproduction foam and rebuild the seats.

 

Even the repro foam for old Mustangs and Camaros doesnt fit well at all. A couple of the really high end shops I've dealt with that do excellent work make their own new foam or build up/repair the existing foam.

I have a bottom half out of an 86 I used to replace my old 86 lower with and it was in excellent shape without that typical wear through you're talking about. From what I could tell the 90 lowers I had here were identical so while there is no aftermarket ill fitting foam available as of yet, I'm sure you could still find a good lower to replace yours.

 

I do not know of a source for the foam seats yet. I would think they will eventually come, but there were several seat options for Firebirds and camaros, it will be hard to say what version they will introduce.. .

I would consider adding some padding to the foam seats you have, you can usually get it at an upholstery shop, I think places like Jo-ann's & Michaels has it. I have a local place that I can get it from. The problem with completely making it yourself is there are steel rods that are molded into the foam for some of the levels of trim. So you may have to get creative to put these in. I have heard that some places are able to steam old foam and get it more or less back to its original shape. I am not sure how long that would last... Kind of like an old pillow I imagine, once it goes flat... You can rejuvinate it to some degree but not completely.

If you go with the foam idea, I would stay away from the "memory Foam." Memory foam is GREAT if you have a nice warm climate. As soon as it gets cold it turns into a rock, and then it becomes soft again when it warms up. I would personally ask your local upholstery shops what kind of foam to get, or if they offer the foam there, as there are different densities for different applications. Too soft and you will end up where you are now, too hard and it may be uncomfortable.
