"Fuel Injection" air cleaner lid

I'm under the impression that GM was only proud enough of TBI to put the decal on the air cleaner in 1988. I've seen a handful with the decal and they all seem to have been 88's. Anyone know any different?

Re: "Fuel Injection" air cleaner lid

I almost bought an 88 SC Vert, and it had that sticker on it too. I was tempted to take it for my 91 RS, which didn't have the sticker. lol

Re: "Fuel Injection" air cleaner lid

Remember that 1988 was the first yar that the carb was gone. Since this air cleaner lid looks similar to that of a carb'd engine, they probably wanted to announce that there was fuel injection under that lid and NOT a carb.

Re: "Fuel Injection" air cleaner lid

Unfortunately this does not address the Fuel injection decal question at this point, but it does address another similar decal... hopefully as I do the research it becomes more apparent...

The 5.0 Liter H.O. Air-cleaner decal was used on the following:
Camaro ( I am not finding much for 1982-1984 so I will only include what is in the IPC.)
1984 - 1986 - L69
1985 thru 1987 - LG4 (NM5 Canadian Export )

I did not find a part number for the "Fuel Injection" decal itself on the air cleaner in the Camaro IPC or Parts catalog, interestingly there is a different part number for the air cleaner itself for 1988 & 1989, which may or may not include the decal, its hard to say as its probably out of production...

I am not sure what would be different about 1990 - 1992 that it would require a different air-cleaner...

On the Firebirds it is very much like the Camaro side of things, but the air-cleaner is specific for 1988... the 1989 - 1992 are all the same, but have a different pt no than 1988.... Again, there was no call out for the decal itself... so it may have been part of the assembly at one point, unlike the L69/LG4 HO call out for the earlier cars where it was a separate item...

I would suspect much like the door handle decals that were put on FI powered Firebirds thru 1987, that the use of the decal on the air cleaner was not required as all F-bodies were Fuel injected... They may have used the decal to entice owners of earlier models to consider a 1988, or if a dealer had old stock of 1987's someone may opt for the FI version of the car for more reliability over the LG4... Of course that is all speculative, but IMHO its probably part of the larger cost cutting measures that would evolve until the end of production in 1992... Keep in mind that the TBI FI was not new for GM in 1988, as it was used on some 1987 Trucks as an option for the 350ci, so many of the bugs would have been worked out...

Re: "Fuel Injection" air cleaner lid

I saw one on an 89 Formula at my local junk yard recently. The decal was slightly different than the one in the picture but pretty similar. The background of this one was orange. I'd never seen one before so it caught my eye. I did think it was pretty funny seeing that they mounted this "trophy" on top of a 170hp engine.

Re: "Fuel Injection" air cleaner lid

Agreed... I think the funner thing would be seeing one on top of the LG4 as they went to Canada masquerading as an H.O.

Re: "Fuel Injection" air cleaner lid

The Canadians won't know the difference, eh.

I always thought the decal was neat even if TBI wasn't. When I got my RS I started hunting for an NOS decal for the hood and found out my parts guy couldn't find a part number in any of the current materials or his vintage books. I bought an entire aircleaner on Ebay to get the lid in the pic, but it's way too rough to put on the car, and it'd be technically wrong anyway. I thought about masking the decal and refinishing the rest of the lid. Maybe it'd be a little more flair to make up for the boring engine at car shows... But I haven't decided if it's worth the trouble.

With the reproduction 5.0 Liter H.O. and 5.7 Liter H.O. decals so easy to obtain it's curious why the Fuel Injection decal hasn't been repopped. I guess it's probably because it's fairly obscure and exclusive to the boring engine.

You might find a sign shop, or a vinyl graphics shop that could duplicate it for you...

And they can do a great job. Here's one I had made to fit an after market air cleaner (BTW, Drew, I added the bumper decal because it and the matching rocker decals were made in a shop in downtown Salina):
