I've seen Dirk still post recently off & on & I always seem to forget about Dan & Victor. Sorry guys!
Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!
Dan Martins car is still with us... does that count?
I search, Dirks last post was like 3 years ago... though he last activity was just a couple months ago.

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!
So......why is this such a debate?????
According to George Carlin, there are 7 words you can't say on radio or TV. But that is "say" not TYPE!! In other words, regardless of what you say in the garage, you don't type it. That implies some idea of a thought process being involved if you are putting down through the keyboard.
So, if somebody is looking to make a statement of some sort, that's fine, but again consider the audience.
If as potential employer I hear every second work punctuated by a profanity, that has severly limited your opportunities for career advancement. The next thing that I hear is as a result of that (and I'll not try to bypass the language filters) is that my boss is a jerk and I deserve better than what I got. So, go figure, but don't hurt your head too much.

Scott is correct. While we all have First Amendment rights, no one has the Constitutional right to dictate to the website's administration and owners that the aforementioned can't establish and enforce some standards of behavior on a website that is private enterprise.
Of course, those who are responsible, use good judgment, and can follow our fairly basic set of guidelines should not (and do not) have a problem.
Thanks.

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!
TGO is a family friendly, work friendly website. I'm getting tired of editing posts to remove the "F" word that has an "*" for the center few letters and other words used to bypass the language filter. I have had to do this quite a bit lately and I'm done. The language issue has come up before and if it continues, I will start issuing infractions and temporary/permanent banning if necessary. Using language to that effect in a public arena does not improve a persons image. Let's try to be more professional here people!

BTW, in most languages code shifting occurs. We use language appropriate to the situation (without considering the shift much): one 'language' for buddies, one for persons of authority, one for wife or girlfriend, one for children, and so on. Because we shift so easily, choosing the appropriate 'language' on or off the net shouldn't be a problem, especially for adults.

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!
ive been guilty of being pretty ignorant on here back when i first joined but i was a child compared to today, now days if i have a difference with someone on here i try to be as respectful as possible, ive learned the hard way here to be as respectful as possible because you never know when your gonna need to ask a question or buy something from that person you just called "dumb ****" or "***hole"
to end my rambling i agree with scott and Drew on this one, we should all be adult enough here to be respectful while still keeping that "garage talk" if we must
..........................
Edit: id like to add that there is a huge difference between cussing casually in a conversation and cussing at someone and starting the name calling, ive found that alot of the newer members have pretty foul mouths towards established members(some senior members are guilty as well, but its mostly the newer members), i find it funny when new members that recently joined like to call out or challenge moderators in their first few post on TGO

I totally agree with Dyno Don, nicely said!
Scott, JT, and the rest of "the crew" here at TGO are doing a fine job trying to keep this thing going. I am a Pastor myself and both my sons do come in here and read some of this stuff sometimes. It's nice to hear that the forum rules are being enforced. We all agreed when we joined, that's freedom! Thanks guys!

I prefer the idea of personal responsibility--that is, being responsible for what you say and what you do. Crazy, radical concept, huh?

This was a point that STEPHEN made earily. Members fighting and cussing with other members. Yes, I agree cussing or using *'s should kept under control, but I DON'T mind the "garage talk". Supreme Member

Here's a great refresher on decent behaviour & civility . . .

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!
Part of the problem might be that some of the moderators aren't active enough. I don't know how the whole process works to become a moderator or keep moderator status but I know there are members that log in on a daily basis who know the rules that could probably do a better job because of how often they are here. There are several mods that haven't been online in over a month and some that haven't made a post in over a year. All the mods need to be active in all areas of this forum if a crackdown on rules is needed. Maybe there is stuff these inactive mods do behind the scenes that I don't see or maybe they visit the site without logging in. Despite this, I think this site is kept well under control and not near as bad as some of the local/regional forums I go to.

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!
The bulk of the moderators were selected when thirdgen.org went to the current format ('99?). They were the people that primarily were knowledgable on the topics and active members. The problem is that it gets tiring answering the same questions day in and day out, and you can only tell people to search so many times. Without a non-technical forum, it gets old for long time members. I gave up my moderator status on this forum because I was living in an apt without internet access and I wasn't really interested in working on thirdgens at the time. I can see how some people wouldn't even think to resign. When you lose interest in a website, you usually just stop logging in.
Reporting posts usually gets prompt reactions. The forums with the most activity seem to have very active mods anyway.

It sounds like some of the current Moderators need to be reminded of their "obligation" as a Moderator, or asked to step out & be replaced by much more active & willing members, who have the time & willingness to become a Moderator.
I know on one Forum I was looking at this morning, I saw a Moderators name that I have NEVER seen. That in itself may not mean a whole lot, but it does indicate that they aren't very active on TGO.

I hope my user-name does not offend anyone. Your allowed to use that word on T.V. >>> If you need me to change it let me know. I hope to keep it............ This forum has helped me alot. Thank you!
Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!
Some of the moderators, there are a few, that haven't been on in a while are no longer with us as they've passed on. As a respect, we've left their user name as a moderator.
I admit there are some that occasionally are known to take a hiatus, but their forum is never un-moderated. First, there are co-moderators for nearly all forums (especially more active ones). Second, you do not need to log-in to view content or be aware of reported posts. Lastly, Report Post notices are reviewed by us in case a moderator is unable to act on the report. I wouldn't judge a moderator's status by their post count, or post frequency, as that doesn't indicate how often they may moderate the forum. While moderators generally do have a good knowledge of the field that their forum covers, there are many members who do as well. The difference is, the moderator volunteers their time to moderate the forums - not exactly post content on the forums. The amount of posts, or frequency of posting, by a moderator is not a good measure of their moderating.
Like all communities, we also rely on users to report posts that violate the guidelines. All staff are unpaid volunteers. In addition to being staff, staff are also members. It would be unfair to expect all staff to know everything going on at any given time, especially considering they are here as both staff and member.
To Report posts that may violate our guidlines, please see the
icon that appears inside each post. Click on that inside of the offending post and it will be reviewed by staff. It's up to the staff to make the final decision and take appropriate action, if deemed necessary. It is a bit ironic that some (though it hasn't been mentioned in this thread) have termed our moderator policy as a derogatory term while others have said it isn't active enough. It just goes to show you the varying opinions and that it is difficult to please everyone.
As far as moderators, we're looking for some additional moderators (established members with no violations who are frequently involved) to either active moderate, or be put on a list for future need. There has been a few moderators shuffled around since we did have one moderator who recently stepped down due to personal concerns.
Some have suggested that we simply add various spellings of the offending words to the filter. The issue with that is the users are trying to bypass the filter in the first place. When the user previews the post, or views the post as being submitted, they will notice the word(s) are filtered and go back and re-edit the post. They add spaces, they substitute one character for another, etc. Therefore, adding variations to the filter is a short-term measure that really won't resolve and address the root issue.
In the end, I think this thread has ran it's course. Scott made a simple thread here that was to serve as a reminder of the censor/filter, and that this website tries to have a "family/work friendly" theme. Trying to defeat the censor/filter will result in moderation of the post and account - especially for repeat offenders.
Any further comments, questions or concerns, send me a PM.
Thanks.
P.S. If you think you can help in some way, or know how to help in some way, send me a PM so that we can discuss.
