I'm tired of editing for language!!!

TGO is a family friendly, work friendly website. I'm getting tired of editing posts to remove the "F" word that has an "*" for the center few letters and other words used to bypass the language filter. I have had to do this quite a bit lately and I'm done. The language issue has come up before and if it continues, I will start issuing infractions and temporary/permanent banning if necessary. Using language to that effect in a public arena does not improve a persons image. Let's try to be more professional here people!

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!

What about those who constantly use the foul language, knowing that it will just be filtered out with *s anyways?

The appearance of the *s doesn't really change much & according to TGO Rules...Foul language isn't permitted. So the use of the * filter over & over (not just by newbies) shows that that person is indeed using the language & just counting on the filter to "cover their rear".

Right after reading this thread, I happened to read a post by a VERY Senior member who obviously knows better, but ignores it.

Quite agree. Are the board members getting younger on here or something.

Now class let us communicate like adults.

I agree, I have seen a big rise in language now, then when I joined. Wish people would act like adults and stop treating this board like there high school. Also wish newbies would stop picking fights with older members.

This has nothing to do with history/restoration. If I was a mod I'd lock or delete your post.

Before posting please take more than 2 mins to look over a few things
1. the person that started this thread is scottmoyer and guess what he is a Moderator
2. scottmoyer is the Moderator of this part of the board namely the History / Restoration
3. If he is editing post because of language they are post in the History / Restoration that he is a Moderator of.

So add them all together and this would be the right place for the post.

No arguements from me! It's not that hard to get your point across without cussing or using *s every other word! Just think of this forum as a converstaion with a Grandparent or authority figure - would you really use that kind of language with them?

That would mean using standard English, instead of text language . I agree with others. Scott, hold to it.

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!

Well, Im one member that does cuss occasionally on here, and I was aware of the language filter, and I must say that I was unaware that some people are so displeased by it.....If ive offended, please accept my sincerest apologies. but I have always thought that language filters were in effect to stop "abusive language" not "casual swearing"....there is a HUGE difference between "go Eff yourself" , and "my Effing car".....I would never do the former but I am guilty of the latter.....Sorry.....I also "circumvent" the filter buy using terms like "Fuggit" and "Sheet" and "Mu11et" and such.....but never in an abusive or inflammatory manner......Ill stop with the 4 letter adjectives pronto guys....Sorry

BTW Ive never posted in the section, the title just grabbed my attention.

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!

RedRokkit, I respect you for owning up to some mistakes and apologizing for them. At the same time, I am certain that the "11" instead of "LL" also counts as bypassing the filter. While I don't personally understand that word being filtered, I still don't bypass it. Why? Because this isn't JeremyNYR.org, it's Thirdgen.org. Their site, their rules. I'm a guest and as such I do my best to respect their rules.

PS- your sig offends me. lol

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!

I use foul language on a daily basis. Personally I think it's ridiculous that some words are more 'evil' or 'dirty' then others. Words are words, what difference does it make? In my experience real people in all but professional context use real words. As far as I'm concerned this forum is no different then when I'm sitting in a garage around a broken car with my buddies, and you better believe the words fly around in those situations. Most of the time anymore I just go ahead and type the appropriate number of *'s because I know it'll block it out and people will get the message anyway. Rather then baby proof the world, let's world proof the babies. The filter works fine, and if ****'s bother people, they really need to get out more.

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!

Speaking of offending sigs......

How about non-foul language sigs, that are an outright insult to many people?

I won't name names here, or quote lines directly, but something along the lines of....."If you drive a white car, your dumb." "If you have stock wheels, your car is ugly." Neither of those are my beliefs (my car is white & has non-stock wheels) or what I've read. Just very similar examples.

Things like that shouldn't be allowed either, especially in sigs that you'll see everywhere the person has posted.

And your 7 year old never turns on TV, or goes to school, sits in the cafeteria, goes to sporting events, the mall, or anyplace else, just sheltered in a plastic bubble allt he time... Right?

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!

This seems to be getting a little blown out of proportion, its not about being sheltered or people voicing thier opinions in thier sig. The mods say the language needs to stop, so do just that. Plain and simple, if someone has a problem with it they find another forum.

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!

i think that people need to see words for what they are... just letters. When i go out to places whether it be to the mall, the pep boys, or even down the street to get gas i hear expletives left and right coming from people. I think so many people use these words that they have now become common language. I just block it out, i have sworn in public before but not just becasue i felt a random need, usually when i hurt myself or get pretty angry. However on these boards and in every other public place i try to make sure my language is PG rated, just out of respect for those who don't casually drop a swear word and of course for the kids around. hey they may learn the word sometime in their life i just don't want them to learn it from me

In general I agree with you. If you owned thirdgen.org the way you own your garage, then it sounds like all of us would let the words fly all we want. I love cursing and making fun of everything I possibly can! But I also know that I don't want to do all the work it takes to run a website of this magnitude so I can't complain about their rules. They way I see with it is you play by their rules or you go elsewhere. If there's enough of a market for a cursing thirdgen site, then it'll prosper. Probably won't happen though.

Also, just to clarify, I was just joking about being offended by Redrokkit's sig. I don't particularly like looking at shirtless men... but I'll live. lol

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!

From experience, moderation can only go so far before it drives people away from the forum. Censoring certain words with ****'s is one thing. Banning people for saying something they know is going to be censored with ****'s or !#@$!%^ is taking it too far. Bypassing the filter is probably a bad idea, and if Scott wants to personally police every word typed beyond the filter, that's up to him. If he has a problem with something I say, I'd rather he let me know directly with a PM, and I'd probably make an effort to not let it slip again. About the time I get a temporary suspension for it, I'll never be back.

Hey, I have to look at half naked women draped across cars every time I'm on a car forum, so if I can survive, you'll be fine, lol.

The half naked girls in avatars and signatures bother me more then the language. Pretty sure that's against the rules around here too. Really though, **** is so easy to find online, it doesn't need to be here too.

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!

Just to clarify, if someone wants to swear and uses the cartoon swearing, I have no problem with that. If Drew wants to swear and uses four ****, I don't have a problem with that. What I do have a problem with is intentionally mispelling the word so that it's still readable. If someone types in the "f" word and leaves out the "c" so that the filter is bypassed, I get irritated. Why? Becase you guys know the rules and by misspelling or using the * as a vowel is in violation of the rules.

I personally know a pastor that frequents these boards, my 12 year old son reads them with me and I also know of ladies that are on this board. Out of respect for all who come here, don't swear! You can get your point across by not swearing or b using Drews method or even the cartoon lines. (&^%*$)

Aaron91RS, your comment above seems a little confrontational. If there is a problem with me posting this, please PM me.

Yes I too am frequently guilty. My ignorance-- I thought a filter changed out a few letters here & there as needed!! No idea til now a Mod would have to do it manualy!!

I usually avoid the language debate, but the family-friendly nature of TGO is something I really like! My 12 year old son comes here a lot, yeah I'm sure he hears stuff at school, but he knows better than to come home & use bad language. I just thimk the mod's policy sets a tone that is intelligent and respectful, that to me is more important than the speech habits of various members. Thanks Scott!

I totally agree with daveb123. Just post your comments as if your 12 year old son (daughter, neice, nephew, you get the picture) will read it. Hopefully, for our hobby, they are interested and following what is going on here. We can't control what they learn on the bus home from school but, we can control what they read here. If you want them to treat you with respect you have to give them a reason to respect you. And while I'm at it, before you hit -Submit Reply- just read what you've written. Having said that I'm sure I will be graded for grammer or spelling.

Yeah, I usually do double-check, I banged that out at work, my boss was due back in the office at any moment, and I'm a crappy typist! Hank, I like your comment about respect!

Ahaha some people really take this seriously,i think most people these days dont even think of it as a bad thing, its just another word to everyday language.Id say just let the words flow without "bypassing" the system..*'s get the point accross and is "kid" appropiate.

That's part of the problem. Desensitizing. The media does it with violence so that younger people see it as everyday actions and they wonder why so much violence towards other people happen day in and day out. Just so the younger crowd understands, I'm not that old....

Thanks everyone for understanding and working towards a better forum!

Thank you. Proofing is often the road to clarity. As for grammar and spelling, after teaching English for 30 years, there are occasions when I can only shake my head in dismay/disbelief at the lack of basic knowledge that some members demonstrate.

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!

I to have cussed occasionally. It has never been my intent to offend any members of TGO. I have used *'s recently and in the past in place of key letters of a swear word, too simply give a sence of frustration of my emotions. (I would like to think that I can count all the times I have used **** all on one hand....maybe!) It has NEVER been aimed at any member of TGO, but situations regrading my car/repairs.

Until today, may use of *'s had never been edited by a MOD. I usually put at least 2 * in a 4 letter word, this was not good enough today.

I fully respect the postion of the MOD(Scott) and all other MOD's, and there rules!

In short, I deeply and sincerely regret if I have offended any members that a past post of mine has caused!

Paul.

Hey Scotty remember me ..... i have a question isn't censoring peoples language unconstitutional thus making it Un-American?... i like my freedom of speech law(s) isn't that what our forfathers fought and died for?..... i dont think the internet should be an exception

It's not unconstitutional when rules have been established and you agreed to abide by those rules upon joining TGO. Freedom of speech doesn't give people the right to be disrespectful of others. A judge can claim that you are in contempt of court if you are speaking after he has told you not to in his courtroom. You have the freedom to speak again, but he has the freedom to cast punishment and consequences.

Scott is correct. While we all have First Amendment rights, no one has the Constitutional right to dictate to the website's administration and owners that the aforementioned can't establish and enforce some standards of behavior on a website that is private enterprise.

Of course, those who are responsible, use good judgment, and can follow our fairly basic set of guidelines should not (and do not) have a problem.

Thanks.

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!

Another forum I'm on has a pretty good solution. Whenever an unapproved word is used, the filter automatically changes it to something stupid. For example, "shucking fit" (it rhymes with that....) would become "laughing bunnies" or something ridiculous. It cut down on the swearing because people got tired of getting made fun of for nonsensical posts.

If someone types in the "f" word and leaves out the "c" so that the filter is bypassed, I get irritated. Why? Becase you guys know the rules and by misspelling or using the * as a vowel is in violation of the rules.
Is it possible to simply add the derivatives of the actual swear words to the filter? This would include the intentional misspellings and such that you've mentioned. It seems like an easier solution if you're going to use filters anyways.

Edit: The idea is that it would be more convenient to add to the filter and be done with it than the alternatives you're considering.

HA! That's awesome lmao!

I swear every now and then and out of good faith I would use symbols as letters when I typed it to not offend, I was in no way ever trying to bypass a filter.

Maybe we need non offensive smilies that would convey strong emotion and replace cuss words. I mean if my car got stolen, there would be cuss in my post, it calls for it. I would use symbols of course, but if I had a smilie that conveyed it then I would totally use that. Other forums that I am on have a blue/green smilie with his arm up and all kinds of symbols in the little language cloud thingie. We should have it here.

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!

WOW, Why did this turn into a debate. Forum rules are just that. The forum rules. He's asking us all nicely to detune our language. Not only to make his job moderating easier, but to keep this place safe for all that want to participate in our hobby. And using the "media" as an example is ridiculous. Just because they are poisining our youth, dosent mean that disrespectful TGO members should. This is a place with good, conservative, pro American values. That why i love it..

Also, after reading some comments above. I beileve the moderators and management should be praised for all there hard work. Not ridiculed or made fun of. if it wasnt for them starting and maintaining this site. There wouldnt be a place of this size and popularity for Thirdgen owners to go. IMO, if you enjoy this site and forum you should be gracious and Thank these guys for helping to keep these Awesome cars alive, well and remembered..

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!

with Scott & JamesC , someone from a non-english speaking country is allowed a few mistakes in grammar . i have to wonder how some people were even able read/pass a drivers test . keep it civil & check your grammar/spelling . say what you mean & and mean what you say in a civil manner . good luck to all .

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, whoa up now... Let's not get carried away here. Moderation and administration have always and will always be thankless jobs! To thank them, sullies the Bushido nature of the job.

Of the 3 original Founders of TGO, only 2 are still active members & neither is part of Management or Maintenance of this site.

So the current Administration & Moderators do a fair job of continueing the work, but as obvious by this thread even existing, a lot of people skirt the rules ans are allowed (a little) to do so. When they get out of line, is when you see the Admin & Moderators step in.

Re: I'm tired of editing for language!!!

According to Dirk, there was 5 original founders of TGO (Dan Martin, Victor Li, Bradley Elliott, Stephen Cranford, Dirk) and none of them are any longer involved with exception to Stephen who is an active member.
