85 Silver Iroc-Z
Hello everyone. Been on the forums a couple of months, but this is my first post. I bought an 1985 Camaro Iroc Z back in November and I'm starting the restoration process. I'd been looking for a silver Iroc for a couple of years and finally found one in Monroe, Georgia. I've read a few threads on the site that have discussed the fact that the silver Iroc's are fairly few in numbers. I'll have to be honest and admit that I discovered this after I bought the car. I'd just always had a thing for silver Iroc's and did not realize that they were only offered one year. I'd love to meet other silver Iroc owners on the forum.

James,
I've seen you car on here. It looks great. How long has it been since your car was sprayed? And if you don't mind, how much do you have in your paint?

Re: 85 Silver Iroc-Z
I'd always loved the silver. I wonder if GM's decision to limit production was due to paint issues during that time period. I remember a lot of cars peeling during that time period. Come to think of it I remember a lot of silver cars with some serious peeling issues.

Re: 85 Silver Iroc-Z
Thanks James. I've had a little trouble finding someone interested in doing an "all over." Most of the shops in my area are just interested in insurance work. I've got a few quotes, but the lowest price I've found is $2500. I've removed decals and starting on parking lamps, turn signals and etc.
Did you remove the rear spoiler? Did you go back with the original GM sliver?

Hi Will. Cool to meet another silver Iroc owner. Nice looking car. It seems we are a part of a rare fraternity. I saw another thread where James C. is trying to figure out just how many silver Camaros were produced. I just don't believe there are many silver Iroc survivors out there.

Here's one for sale in Edmonton, AB. It's been repainted, but hopefully the original colour . . .

It's odd, but of the met. silver Camaros I'm aware of, most seem to be from Canada.

I've see several third gens for sale around Athens, GA. Seems to be a camaro hotbed in that area as well. Isn't there some camaro resto parts businesses in that part of Georgia as well.

Re: 85 Silver Iroc-Z
james,
There's a nice silver 85' Iroc Z on Ebay right now. Check it out. It has the silver irocZ decals on the doors, silver badges, and silver/black lower body stripes. These weren't factory options were they? I assume that the decals/badges were color choices by the owner. I'm actually thinking about going with the silver badges. I have purchased black IrocZ door decals. I am undecided about the lower body stripes.
I don't have the link. Just search for Iroc z28 and it will be about 10-12 down.

He sure hypes it up a lot, but it does look like a really nice ride. Tempting if I lived nearby and hand a few $$$ burning a hole in my pocket.

Re: 85 Silver Iroc-Z
I was bored and googled silver IROC tonight and came across this thread so I figured I'd post up pics of mine(Mine actually shows up as the 2nd picture on Google but from a picture I posted on an S10 message board). I have only seen one other one in person and it was from Canada. Mine has just shy of 48K miles on it. It had 42K on it when my dad bought it in 1993. I bought it from him in 2007. He had only put about 3300 miles on it since he bought it and most of that was me taking it out and driving it. It's about 98% stock/original. 305 TPI, auto.

man thats clean! my is about 99% original also but with black interior... not too many 85' silver iroc's out there... ive only seen about 6 or 7... i have pics of mine posted in other threads.....
Re: 85 Silver Iroc-Z
It's got a few little blemishes. There's a crack in the fascia under the drivers parking light where the owner before my dad smucked a parking block or curb and cracked it and scraped the underneath. There's a door ding above the molding on the passenger door. There's a couple rust bubbles under the leading edge of the hood for some reason. There's a little fading on the top of the rear seat and this year when I got it out, I see the headliner is starting to sag in a couple spots. That pisses me off the most since it was perfect last year.
It's had a new gas tank/pump/lines because the original tank rusted on the inside from sitting so much. I had to put a new exhaust on it since that rusted out as well and went with a Dynomax since it's about the closest to stock looking. It has new(now old) tires my dad put on in 1994. He cheaped out and just put Firestone Firehawk T rated touring tires instead of Z rated performance tires. The owner before my dad had put Morso wirees and Accel plugs in it. I'm not sure if there's anything else they changed on it. At one point it had an alarm on it as I found traces of old wires for a hood sensor I removed. They had a hard wire for a radar detector as well that I removed.

Took a TON of pics of the car tonight. http://s107.photobucket.com/albums/m...5hp/85%20IROC/
One strange thing about my car, the drivers side has red center caps on the wheels but the passenger side has silver center caps. It had the original tires on it when my dad bought it and the caps were that way then to my knowledge. What color are everyone else's caps?

Re: 85 Silver Iroc-Z
I have one too. I had a black 85 IROC in high school early 90's. Traded it for a truck and late 90's tried to find it. I was a few weeks too late and went to the auction. A year later tracked it back down and the latest owner was very defensive (drug dealer) and said he put a carb motor in and and later side-swiped it. So I gave up and found this silver one on ebay with 96,000 miles on it. Its 305 TPI, auto, Posi, Black CC cloth, split back seats, rear wiper, power antenna, t-tops, overhead console. Seems pretty loaded. It has no rust, but the front fenders and cover are in bad shape so im getting ready to restore it. Ill eventually get my garage done with pics. This site if full of info. Thanks

This is one of my dream to own third gens. Fully loaded with the red conteur interior. Such an awesome color combo in my opinion.
Re: 85 Silver Iroc-Z
That car has been on Ebay numerous times. I have several pictures of it and another one that were on ebay in the past couple years. This one has polished center caps which didn't come out until 88 if I remember right. I know someone in Wisconsin that has one and it also has the polished caps.

The silver "appears" to be the backing for the cap itself. Check post #6 and pics 1 and 2 of the following post for a visual:

Re: 85 Silver Iroc-Z
James is correct. That car should have the black center caps. The glue has a tendency to fail, especially with FL heat and the backing plate is silver. New center caps are available to complete this car. It doesn't appear to be far from me. I might have to check it out!! I was heading into Tavares today anyway.

Re: 85 Silver Iroc-Z
I think the center caps might have plastic over them or something. I can clearly see the older style (IROC Z) writing in one of the pics and surface looks bubbly.
Wow Silver is a great color on these cars. Good to have you here, and thanks for posting your car!

That's right, 85-87 and 88-90 center caps are not interchangeable.

You can add one more Silver IROC to the forum. We have had it since we purchased it new in July 1985. Over the years I have only seen one other Silver IROC here in California. So I am enjoying seeing all of yours.

Re: 85 Silver Iroc-Z
Our Silver IROC is a California car built at the Van Nuys plant. We bought it new for around $18,600. It is a 305 TPI automatic car with a grey interior. It has been the wife's daily driver for the last 26 years. It is holding up well overall and still gets alot of compliments and notes left on it asking if we want to sell.

Re: 85 Silver Iroc-Z
I've been dying to submit pics to the forum, but wanted to have it finished first. Well, we're really close, just a few more line items on the garage white board.
Synopsis:
1991: 16 years old, first car. Bright Silver Metallic, Black Lear Siglear "Camaro" interior, 5 speed.....sold it for a Eagle Talon Turbo AWD......I was young
2010: Wanted to have it back...found out what I had was really hard to find, so we decided to make it out of a grey '87 Z28.
June 8, 2011: We made Power Tour in Indy and Muskegon in color, Bright Silver Metallic, but not finished yet.
First pic is on my 16th birthday pulling out of the driveway after getting my license.
2nd and 3rd pic are from today with the repilica...I think my 4 year old likes it as much as I did back then.

I'm southwest of you, near St. Joe/Stevensville, on the Lake. I have a good friend in G.R., that called me one day from the road and was behind you on the highway, he loved your plate...small world.
I had no idea how "rare" of a car I had until I started looking for one. Not that it's worth a fortune, but it would have been much easier to have started with an original than trying to make one. I need to make a garage gallery of the project, but here is what we started with in Nov. and a little of the adventure.

I've always loved the silver. Nice cars guys. ....I've never been a fan of grey interiors, although i know that puts me in the minority!!! LOVE the red. I've always wanted to do a 88-90 Iroc, paint it silver, but do Medium Beechwood interior. Make it LOOK like a factory car, that of course wasn't ever offered.
